Photo from Eddie's gallery.

Still struggle with this theme. Always second guess myself wondering if it fits

I hear ya Eddie. I have followed this thread since Shane started it. I was all excited at first. Then I realized that these shots should be much more than random snap shots and (IMO) shouldn't be posed portraits. When I look at my stuff I rarely feel that it "fits the theme". Shane's work is fantastic.

My kids have become so annoyed by my camera over the last couple years that they rarely cooperate......despite my backing WAY off. They just can't stand the camera...period. I think I'm going to set a goal to try and capture more candid/story telling type shots this summer. It's hard to get good ones though. I'm not a big fan of shots where I can't see at least most of my subjects face. I'm not interested in a bunch of snaps of the back of people's heads. I wish the a6500 had a fully articulating screen so I could shoot from the hip a little better. The LCD is also quite small and I have a hard time seeing it!

OK, I was in two minds (at least) about whether to post the photo below but now I can, because this discussion gives me a reason.

In short, I think this qualifies as 'family photojournalism'. It's not posed and it's more than a snapshot. It provides a sliver of commentary on everyday family life as it's lived today (two year old with furrowed brow engrossed in i-pad while four-year-old cousin supervises). It qualifies ... but it isn't especially good and I really did need this discussion to tip me into posting it.

Your photo just two or three messages above (https://photography-on-the.net …showthread.php?p=18371131) also qualifies according to the same criteria ... but has the additional merit of being really rather good (a generally better photograph with stronger composition and a much more interesting and involving story).

Btw, I have a slight preference for monochrome for photojournalism shots. I think that 'bare bones' thing that is often integral to a black and white shot usually carries the story better. But colour can work too.

^^I totally agree with you comments above and agree that this is an appropriate image for this thread.^^ I too am partial to B&W for the "photojournalism" thread. This is also a reason I haven't contributed too much....I just don't convert a many images. That said, I think color could work. I might start experimenting with a subtle matte finish/desaturated look. That might go well with this theme?!?

Hockey and wedding photographer. Favourite camera / lens combos: a 1DX II with a Tamron 45 1.8 VC, an A7Rii with a Canon 24-70F2.8L II, and a 5DSR with a Tamron 85 1.8 VC. Every lens I own I strongly recommend [Canon (35Lii, 100L Macro, 24-70F2.8ii, 70-200F2.8ii, 100-400Lii), Tamron (45 1.8, 85 1.8), Sigma 24-105]. If there are better lenses out there let me know because I haven't found them.

While were on this subject, Ive been really pushing to layering my images. Ive said this before and I still havent taken a single one that Im really proud of. HA! Anyway, we should all keep at it and keep working.

The toughest part for me is layering the image, tell the whole story, and still keeping my composition solid. Its damn near impossible sometimes, I think.

If this is how you feel about your images than I should just give up photography now!

You seriously undervalue your talent.

This isn't a picture I would normally share, just a shot from my phone and edited with snapseed... but our sweet rabbit was taken to the emergency vet last night (Sunday night) because she wasn't eating and was having some sort of paralyzation of her hind legs... she didn't make it through the night :(
