I wonder if using artsy type processing would be appropriate for family photojournalism or would it take away from trying to tell a story?

Read the first post for what the OP wanted the thread to be, but classic PJ is B&W, personally I prefer B&W by far, but you can have great colour PJ shots. But the second the PP is more noticeable than the content and is drawing your attention , then it's not been very well done.

I think it can be argued to be many things.

But I think if you go back through this thread, and look at the photos that got the most reaction, likes, whatever, are the black & white ones that look candid and look like they're capturing a moment of life that we all see day to day and don't photograph (because life is messy, and people in their PJ's and underwear don't normally want their photograph taken, lol, some of you are blessed with very tolerant models!). I follow this thread looking for those messy life moment photos that don't look posed and are not just someone who knows they're getting an image taken; candid look is best here, basically the look of life happening but without their knowledge that its being recorded. It has a look to it that is excellent.

++++++++++

Here's one from several years ago that I always enjoy seeing. We just found her with the fridge open and plopped down working on getting into that chocolate syrup. Couldn't help but grab an image, even though she saw me and knew we were watching by that point. And I honestly don't think it fits the "photojournalism" theme, because she was looking, she knew we caught her. Maybe if she were not paying attention to us and was more focused on the syrup?

Great picture.

So......your reefer looks a little anemic. I'm seeing a diet of eggs, chocolate syrup and the occasional pop. Champion fuel. :rolleyes:

I'm sure we've all been there after a good deep clean on a fridge that got left open for a bit by someone.

I know what you mean by looking at the camera not really being PJ, for me it would be perfect if they weren't looking at the camera, but, is that just being too picky, after all it's not staged, it's not a portrait, it is PJ :)

Ideally ... the subject is not looking at the camera or, at least, does not realise they are looking at the camera. But, as long as they are un-posed and have only just caught the camera's eye, I think it's OK if not desirable.

In general, though, neither the photographer nor the camera should intrude on the image in a PJ photograph. The act of observation should not affect what is observed.

But ... ref. the pictures above ... being caught in the act and proven guilty can be a PJ theme in itself. In that case, this is what the picture is all about and eyes on camera is not just OK, it's necessary.

Very best,

I think this one is great. Not looking at the camera isn't a must for PJ. Many powerful PJ shots have people looking at the camera.

I'm not sure about these....mainly cause there's not a lot of environment in them due to being shot at 75mm Fov (50mm on crop). Regardless, this little series is intended to tell the story I saw unfolding in our backyard at that particular time.
