"Dirty Harry" the Hairy Woodpecker continues to visit my feeder. Not sure why he looks like this, but he has been dirty for a couple of months.

He's even dirty on the backside!

He tries to look cute, but it's a struggle!

Nice set Sandy.

I'm wondering if he's been getting into sap? I've seen birds around here do it, then get sticky and dirty.

Hah, I had a Downey a year ago that looked like that for a time. The sap idea is the best suggestion I've heard. Good shooting, Sandy.

Thank you everyone for checking out "Dirty Harry," and for taking the time to comment. The woodpeckers all drink out of my heated pan of water, but I have never seen one take a bath! In the summer, they have their choice of the pan of water, or the bird bath...but still no bathers!

He certainly is a mess Sandy!
Great captures displaying "His Messiness" too. I've also seen dirty woodpeckers around and similar to Beekeepers' hypothesis someone remarked to me about the tree in which they may live. I also don't think I've ever seen the red crown split into 2 parts like that. I hope it's not related to ill health and that he graces your feeders for some time to come.

Thanks Steve! I have been concerned about his health at times too, but he acts okay, and eats suet often.
