I'm trying to put together a photobook of some old holidays. I would like to introduce each holiday with a map of the area we were, possibly relating it to the wider area.

Example - for Malta, show a map of the eastern Med, with a circle round Malta and than a larger image of Malta with an arrow to where our hotel was.

Does anyone know of any web site or application for drawing attractive maps? Screengrabs of Bing and Google would be fine, but not terribly attractive... (and possibly not entirely legal either!)

Thanks!

I use maps in a similar fashion in my photo books. I do use the snipping tool a lot to get maps from Google maps. I'll also just search for maps on-line (National Park maps, or outlines of area) then build my own from those basic foundations to show the points-of-interest for my trip. I'll sometimes show the driving route during a trip, so Google maps or Mapquest works well for that. I'll do something similar for the hiking tracks by snipping the maps from Ramblr after I've uploaded a track to the website. These are not necessarily the most beautiful of creations, but they do get the job done. Of course this is just for my use, not commercial.

You may be able to get what you are after at https://freevectormaps.com/ (external link). The site is a bit tedious to use but once you get the hang of things it can go quickly.

Much of what "freevectormaps" has is sourced from http://www.naturalearthdata.com/ (external link). It being a public domain source I would also check it out.

I took a quick look at those sites. I think they would be quite useful. Thanks!

Thank you for the suggestions. For my photobook I ended up using Bing maps' aerial view, screengrabbing it and editing in Photoshop. It's probably a little naughty, but it's just for personal use and it worked really well!
