Holy cow was she serious?! I would have expected a "sorry" at least! Ignorant people...

I wonder if she would take it as easy as this if it was her 2000$ thingy

However, i always wondered why you guys in the US are having so much focussing, decentering and "bad copies" lenses as i have bought 10 lenses all new, a few used ones and never had any issue. Even my 50L was good out of the box as it was. And now i think, maybe the swiss post is more carefully with the packages ;)

I think it is a matter of numbers. There are a lot more Canon owners over here, possibly there are more Rebel T3i owners here than people over in Switzerland :-P

...and by the way, our USPS lady is courteous and careful with our packages, she even went around to the back to leave a package large enough not to fit the mailbox. The UPS and the FedEx guys have regularly tossed packages over the (locked) iron gate...

For anything breakable, I specify 'signature required' and they normally put it on the evening run (UPS). Normally I am home by then.

I recently bought a lens from Amazon. It was shipped like this.

It had a large piece of debris inside the front element so I returned it, with more packing material btw.

Received the replacement today like this.

Why even bother putting packing material in there?

i just bought a Zeiss lens from Amazon and it was packaged almost exactly like yours, when i got the box i could hear and feel the Zeiss box bouncing around inside but luckily it was not damaged.

I live in Aus but couriers here are no better. I've had lenses left on my door stop before and my street has a lot of foot traffic.

I have had a PO Box for many years now and I don't think I could go without one. It may still get dropped along the journey, but you don't have to worry about the courier just leaving it on a door step or throwing it over a gate like someone mentioned.

Then again, maybe we are babying our gear unnecessarily too much :) Most better lenses are built like tanks and would need a lot to break

I mean I once dropped my TSE24ii from about 80cm onto my foot. I'd say before that lens would break it would rather break my foot haha

I wish I took a picture of the Amazon box my 135mm just came in. I was actually shocked not only was there plenty of packing material surrounding the lens, but they actually somehow shrink wrapped the lens to the inside of the Amazon box. Basically, keeping the lens tightly in place and there was no chance of the lens moving around. It was very refreshing to see.

Good to hear. Maybe there's hope :)

L lenses are built to last and take some bumps..and the boxes Canon uses are designed to protect the lens though all phases of shipping and handling. They suspend the lens with two blocks of high density foam that take the shock of impact and keep it within tolerable levels to not damage the lens. Canon lenses come from overseas most likely by container ship, then truck or rail, to the retailers warehouse..and then it has to get to you. They package them to survive.
