Does anyone use a simple tilt head on their monopod ? i'm looking to use a waist support pouch rather than using the monopod on the ground. This gives more freedom of movement or fast action sports events. However I see that Manfrotto tilt heads are only safe for up to 2.5 kg. and I was hoping to use the same set up for my 300 f2.8 and possibly 500 f4 lenses. The 500 is 4 kg plus. Is anyone using this set up who could advise ? Im not really looking to use a mega expensive sophisticated set up, just something simple but tough.

I have thought of doing this also. My thoughts ran more toward using a flag carrier - like people us in marching bands. This would give good support and is actually designed to do what is needed to be done! LOL!!

I had also looked at various tilt heads and decided that one of the quick release handle heads would be best to use in this fashion as when the release handle is squeezed or otherwise triggered the head goes free to be swiveled or moved by your other hand. This gives a little more freedom of movement for framing. The real restriction comes from the fixed length of a rigid monopod. Length is usually fixed and cannot be adjusted very easily on the fly. Now if there were a "spring-loaded" option for one of the legs, with say a tensioner of some type to allow varying amounts of spring tension, then you'd have a real winner!

Good luck with your project and with your shoot!

Hmmmmm. I thought I posted to this thread. I guess not.

I have an RRS MH-02 monopod head. It's amazing. It wasn't cheap but truth be told, I'd have to look up the price because I forgot.

That's the way it usually works for me. If I like something, I often forget the price but if I cheap out and end up not liking what I purchased, I never, ever forget what I paid.

I was just in the market for the same thing for my new sigma 500mm lens. After researching around and looking at manfrotto and others, RRS seemed to be considered one of the better tilt only monopod heads.

So I bought one and have to say its amazing. Its buttery smooth and very solid and well built. It might not be the cheapest, but for having over 4 grand of equipment sitting on it, I'd rather just go with one of the most recommended heads for big telephoto lenses.

Get a Really Right Stuff monopod head and be done, haha. It holds up to 75lbs of weight, and the clamp can hold 50lbs of weight.

I love that it just tilts and doesnt pan as that is easy enough to do with a monopod anyways.

I just bought a Sirui L-10 tilt head from B&H for my Sirui P-326 monopod. It arrived yesterday. I used it today with my Canon 7DmarkII and my Canon 70-300L IS lens (a heavy combination) and it felt rock solid. I am pleased with the quality of the Sirui products. I paid $109 for the tilt head and it included a Sirui quick release plate. Sirui has a 6 year warranty.

To those that bought the Sirui L-10 tilt head, does it allow a camera to tilt up and down with a camera body attached to the quick release plate. I have read reviews that say the Sirui L-10 will not tilt up and down with a camera body attached. When mounting a camera with a semi-permanently attached quick release plate on it already, the tilt head tilts LEFT and RIGHT instead of FORWARD and BACK, as you'd expect.

Regards,

110yd

The head allows the camera to tilt (the lens and the scene being photographed go up and down). Works great on a monopod where you can easily tip the whole rig right or left to straighten a horizon (or pan from right to left).

Some people mistakenly buy the L-10 head for use on a tripod and can't figure out how to tip it to straighten a horizon. They complain and return it as unsatisfactory. But a tripod is not its intended use.

It can be a little confusing when referring to the three axes of movement. Hopefully you get what I mean.
