My dogs last day

Dear Board,

A couple of weeks ago I posted a couple of stupid pictures of my dog Avalon out in the back yard eating snow. I remarked that I lacked skills, my cameras as well as my dog were inadequate and old, but I posted them anyway.

On Monday February 16th I had to put down the best friend I have ever known. I knew from the minute Avalon and I got up and went downstairs that morning that her time was short. I couldn't be bothered with getting one of my "better" cameras out of the bag to record things so I shot them with a brand new to me Canon SX10IS. Don't let these pictures discourage you from picking up a cheap used one or picking up a rescue dog.

I lost my dog this past year also, actually just adopted a rescue... had him for a week today.

You were lucky to have the love of such a wonder creature.

Tough day. Very sorry for your loss. I lost my buddy (see the avatar) over a year ago now.

Very sorry to read this. I still miss my dog who has been gone five years now. Remember the good times and it helps.

I never grew up with animals, and I always thought it was silly the way some people treated their dogs as if they were kids.

Then we bought a Golden Retriever when our kids were old enough to have a pet. We all grew to love Shelly; she was with us long enough to see all three kids grow up and move on, and then she passed. I cried like a baby.

Seven years later we got Harley, another Golden. He's only three, but my wife and I have become very attached to him, and love him to pieces, especially since he's our only "kid" now. I'm already dreading the day we'll have to say goodbye to him. It will be devastating.

Sorry to ramble. But I understand completely what you're going through, Tim.

Thank you for the kind words and thoughts. I was reluctant to post this but I felt that Avalon was a good enough buddy that someone other than Theresa and I should know about her. She was loved by friends and family but I wanted to make sure that other people that may be considering a pet understand just a bit more.

Owning a dog or a cat, or a rabbit or chicken for that matter, is a life long commitment that should only be undertaken if you are confident that you can handle all of it. No one can be sure of everything that will come their way, but you need to know that a pet is a commitment. A pet depends on you. There will be curveballs thrown at you and days when you might want to scream, but those are quickly forgotten when you and your buddy are out and about making time and friends and enjoying life.

I would like to ask one favor though. I would like people who are considering a pet to seriously consider adopting one through a rescue or shelter. If you have your heart set on a specific breed and understand the temperament and requirements of the breed then go for a pure breed. But if you just want a buddy, and you want to work with that buddy to find the things that you both like then think about adopting. There are a lot of dogs, and cats, out there who never did anything wrong other than be born. Avalon was one of them.

They'll still love you up, and you will love them just the same.
