White Background Fake?

I did some portraits on a white background recently, and after opening them in Photoshop, it looks as though I copied the subject subject and pasted them on a layer filled with white. This is before any major editing either. Maybe its just the lighting? Still a little new to using strobes...I'll upload a few examples once I'm home.
Just wondering if anyone has experienced this? It's like the background is TOO white, so it looks fake.

Obviously it all depends on what you want but the background is a separate element of the image and should be lit separately. When lighting your subject you need to flag your lights to stop unwanted light reaching the background. You may also need to use lights specifically to light the background (separately from the subject).

I found the two videos referenced in this article quite useful. Zack Arias gets a bit repetitive at times, but still some good ground covered.
