Hi everyone,

I've been shooting for a long time but up until now have never really shopped for flashes. I'm not sure what it is that I should be looking for. It will almost solely be used for macro work. I'm not into portraits so that's not really a concern. I want it to be budget friendly though.

I had a look through the "show us your macro rig" post and there's lot of good ideas in there. To start I'm looking at the Yongnuo 568 because I've heard that Yongnuo is a decent brand at a fraction of the price of a Canon. I was also thinking about a diffuser box to go over it and maybe an off camera flash cable.

Do you think this would be enough to get me some decent light? I'd also like to try a set up like this where there is a flash on each side: https://photography-on-the.net …showthread.php?p=17367767 . Would this flash allow me to run a second flash as well or does that have nothing to do with it?

Any other flash shopping tips would be appreciated!

I have been using a 270EX (2xAA batteries) for quite a long time now and results that I am happy with:

However, I do hope to upgrade to a Nissin i40 with 4xAA batteries but still light and small enough: http://www.amazon.com …0&linkId=U3QHYVJLQTCEQ72L (external link)

Thanks Kurt,

I was looking at that one too after seeing your post in the Marco Rig thread. I like the size and that it doesn't use as many batteries. Can it be used wireless? I might have to look into it a bit more before I commit to the Yongnuo.

270EX II can be triggered wirelessly. Same for the i40. But you'll need newer bodies. 60D can do that I think. Not on the older bodies like the 40D though.

new Venus twin flash could be a good buy, much cheaper than Canon equivalent, I certainly won't be having my MT-24EX ever repaired again!

Thanks for the replies. I ended up going with Nissin DI 622 Mark II. I also picked up a flash diffuser and off camera flash cable. I read through Bryan Peterson's - Understanding Flash Photography book which was very helpful. I'll eventually pick up a second flash but for now this does the trick for me and is working great.
