Formatted and took pictures on my Sony RX100II with a 64gb Patriot LX series SDxc card. Pulled card for PP in LR5. Windows 7 Prof laptop doesn't recognize card. Windows 8.1 laptop doesn't recognize and when I put card back into camera, it does not recognize. I'm an experienced photographer and not aware of doing anything wrong. Have not reformatted as I would like the pictures. Since nothing recognizes the card I can't run any recovery software. Any solutions on this? Card is under warranty, but I would like the pictures.

Thanks

Do you have a USB card reader that is positively known to be SDXC compatible?. If not you may wish to consider buying one and giving that a try. On the chance your original post wasn't clear, and you are using a card reader, the update the readers driver using the reader manufacturers website and then retest.

Not sure what you mean by "nothing recognizes". If Windows wants to format it, then it is able to see the card. Have you tried the different recovery apps?

Both computer slots on a Windows 7 pro and a Windows 8.1 laptop, 2 desktop card readers and Sony RX100 II camera that took the pictures ALL fail to recognize now that there is an SD card. I can't format what a computer and the camera doesn't realize exists.

There are several factors that can be causing the issue. Hence the reason we are beginning to see an abundance of issues involving SDXC cards, many of which are 64 GB. Let's start with the computer since the Sony device you mention is compatible with SDXC. It is my understanding, and I could be wrong, that to use SDXC in some, and perhaps all devices, the reader, be it external or internal, must support USB 3.0. Not all PC's do this. On my 3-year old desktop (Win7 Pro) I had to upgrade the USB driver 3.0. Using device manager I got the statement the driver was up to date. However, there was a driver at Dell's website which I installed. Keep in mind this only took care of the USB 3.0 bus internal to the PC. My external card reader (Lexar Professional USB 3.0) still would not work with SDXC cards. However, there was a driver update for the Lexar reader and one of the issues addressed was SDXC compatibility. When I upgraded the reader driver, then everything worked properly.

Now, before you go stating that you have different hardware, you've upgraded to Win7 and Win8.1, etc. let me state that my purpose here was simply to point out there might be multiple drivers that you need to insure are compatible with SDXC. If these PC's have internal card readers, go to the PC makers site and verify everything is up to date. Personally I would update the BIOS as well.

The statement below is something from Lexar's website applicable to an external card reader, just FYI.

Does the Lexar® Professional USB 3.0 Dual-slot Reader support all SDXC™ cards?Yes, but before inserting the SDXC card into the reader, please make sure the operating system of your computer is compatible with SDXC cards and supports the exFAT file format.

When i see that 1/3 of the reviewer put 1 star and complain here >

I would not have anymore hope to get the picture back

specially with title of reviews like that:

  • Stopped working with my T2i during first use
  • Card just suddenly died
  • 2 bad cards directly from manufacturer
  • one day my camera stopped seeing it
  • Dead in 6 months
  • Died without warning. Unreliable

    And so on ...

Thanks for taking the time to respond. I'll recheck drivers but the fact that the camera itself does not recognize the card leads me to believe the problem is the card. Would not buy or use Patriot again. Just wanted the pictures.

Thanks for the review link. I will add mine. Bought through Newegg. Glad I did not use it for a paid shoot.

This information is incorrect by Lexar marketing. Computer itself has nothing to do with SDXC. You basically need SDXC compatible slot. And since SDXC starts at 64GB, you will need support of either exFAT or NTFS. Win7 Pro will support that. Win8 will also support that. Older windows like XP may not, but I can at work tomorrow.

Well it is a direct quote from the FAQ's section of the Lexar website so perhaps they need to get their info correct.

Usually, the ones who wrote the info on the website are NOT enginners. They read spec and interpret it then put it in nice writing.

Here is the technical reason why computer does NOT matter. A card reader, could it be the dedicated reader or a slot embedded into a labtop, it basically translate the SD interface into USB. So from computer point of view, it is no more than a USB drive. The card slot itself much be able to communicated with the card, thus SDXC support is required. On the computer side, it just needs to support exFAT or NTFS for biggering 64GB.

For a dedicated reader, it is most likely a native support unless you have a version that let you update FW. For a embedded card slot, a driver may be needed for XC support.
