I am in a stuck situation and really want to know for fast action sports which is the better 2. Yes I am leaning towards the Sony and sell off my canon stuff but I read the EVF takes time to get used to and sometimes is annoying in fast sports. I am a "Sports Dad" who loves taking pics of my kids in MMA (Mixed Martial Arts), Travel Soccer and Deck Hockey. Deck hockey in 2009 is what started me into the DSLR world and is the toughest for me to shoot. My t2i is simple. Set 85mm 1.8 on @ 1/640, f1.8, iso 1600, center dot, spot meter - and shoot, crop try to cleanup. There is no tracking so I want to move to something with technological advances.

Trying to determine of the 2 which is better in high iso and fast shutter. Not sure if they are close meaning choose either or if one blows the other out of the water.

Guy I work with is a Canon guy (5dm3, tons of lenses and shoots weddings as a 2nd shooter) but picked up a Sony A7 and loves it. He is contemplating switching all his gear out. he says the RAW files are just so much cleaner. I get that A7 is FF and the A77ii is crop thus why im pondering.
thanks guys

hopefully someone can help me clear my cloudy head.

Ok, I switched from Canon to Sony mirrorless cameras. I have the A7II, A7s and the a6000 and use all of them in my photography business. The a7II's auto focus for sports is nowhere near as good as the 7DII. It has a hard time tracking as well as the 7d MarkII. The a6000 on the other hand does have a focusing system very close to the 7D Mark II. I was shooting my a6000 side by side with a good friend and his 7D Mark II at a bird show and my a6000 produced just as many keepers as his. In fact, there were a couple of shots I captured that the 7D Mark II didn't.

The a7ii is a fantastic all around camera, beautiful full frame images. The a6000 is the sports camera. Pair that the the 70-200 f4 and you are money for sports. I also found that the a6000 has better high ISO control than the 7D Mark II as well. It's amazing that they were able to put all this in a 600 camera.

With that being said, I would get the A7II just for it's all around capabilities. You could always do what I did, get an A7II and an a6000 and you're covered for everything.

I sold 2 5D Mark III's and a 1DX when parting with my canon stuff. All three of my camera cover everything that I need for work and then some.

I'm not a fanboy either, I choose what's best for my business and at this time it was the sony mirrorless cameras.

I shoot weddings, portraiture and commercial

Too funny, OP made the same mistake when posting in the a7ii thread... OP is asking about the a77ii, not the a7ii.

OP; personally I would get the 7Dmk2. While EVF's have come a long way and on cameras like the a7S there's little to complain about, on a camera like the a77ii with it's max sensitivity of ISO25,600 I imagine it's EVF would perform very similarly to how my a7R's did and if that's the case I wouldn't want one when shooting sports. The EVF will have a slight lag in many situations, and a good bit of lag in others (dimly lit room, lens stopped down, etc.).

Another camera to consider: the Samsung NX1

The a6000 surprised me for sure. I experimented with my friends camera, and with my 28-70 kit lens, didn't have issues in a dimly lit room with a slow variable zoom. The a7r was dropping frames like mad in the same room. The tracking system looks great as well.

The a77 is probably even better than the a6000, plus translucent mirror for faster AF.

Would you need much more than the 16-50mm f/2-2.8 and the 50-150mm f/2.8?

Yeah 70-200 would be nice or more zoom for soccer...

70-200mm is a strange FL on a crop sensor imo, 50-150mm (75-225mm equivalent) is far more useful imo. They also have a 50-200mm if you really needed that extra reach. I'd have to agree with McLaren that between the a77ii and the NX1 I would take the NX1, but I'd still take the 7Dii over either.

Same here. Mirrorless/SLT cameras are nowhere near being ready for prime time IMO.

That fully depends on your needs. My a7S meets or exceeds my every need and expectation well beyond what my 6D did.

Tell that to my wedding and commercial business since I went form a 5D Mark III and 1DX to an A7II, A7s, and a6000 and haven't missed a beat.
