We had a fat tire mountain bike race last weekend. So I took the opportunity to hone in my slow shutter speed panning skills with my 100-400 and 7D. Got quite a few nice keepers. Both shots here were shot at 100mm 1/40th hand held.

Nice shots. I shot a CX race last month, seeing your shots, I'm kicking myself for not doing some panning shots.

The news paper photographers were there taking static shots so I wanted my shots to stand out and tell a little more of a story. I really like the feel of a good pan shot. I have spend quite a bit of time panning motorcycles ice racing over the past few years so shooting mountain bikes felt quite a bit easier. I guess practice does pay off. :)

All the practice is well worth it. Trust me, a many shots went to the delete button but now I know for my technique I get my best results around 1/40th-1/60th. Basketball games are also great ways to practice. Kids and sports=lots of opportunity to practice and become better.

it's really difficult! tried my hand at it during college cycling races, still trying to get better but it takes a lot of practice for sure

Awesome shots! Most of the races around here have the same photographer and he is really really good. BUT all of his shots are static. I took these at the last cyclocross race of the season. I thought I did ok for being a hobbyist. Not pro material but I was practicing action shots.

Is this the 100-400 II lens?. If so, or not, would you mid giving more details of the setup used - both camera and lens - especially what IS, if any, mode did you use on the lens - thanks.

Hockey and wedding photographer. Favourite camera / lens combos: a 1DX II with a Tamron 45 1.8 VC, an A7Rii with a Canon 24-70F2.8L II, and a 5DSR with a Tamron 85 1.8 VC. Every lens I own I strongly recommend [Canon (35Lii, 100L Macro, 24-70F2.8ii, 70-200F2.8ii, 100-400Lii), Tamron (45 1.8, 85 1.8), Sigma 24-105]. If there are better lenses out there let me know because I haven't found them.

These are class shots, the mk II looks much better than the mk I. Panning does really stand out for bike shots.

Dave.

A load of Canon Gear.

I like a cycling shot with some motion blur. I particularly like the shot of yours were the rider's foot is blurred as well as the background.
