Was testing out a new (to me) 1D Mark III to see if it is in good working order. I think the camera is worth keeping :-)

All images shot with 1DMKIII, 600mm f4L IS v1, 1.4x TC, 430ex + Better Beamer. Very little cropping.

This one was cropped about 50%. He was so close I had trouble catching him in-frame!

And this guy was from yesterday. Same setup, but 1DsMKIII w/o flash.

The 1D3 seems to work good, love your shots. How do you like the Better Beamer? I bought one over a year ago and have never used it.

Thanks Boulder - that's my favorite too.

Ian - it wasn't intended, but you can actually see the difference a flash makes in the first 5 images vs. the 6th image. It adds some detail and helps to separate the subject from its background. In this cold weather (10 degrees before wind chill) my flash was struggling. Within 30 minutes I had to switch out two sets of batteries three times. Using a flash can be a pain, but when things are hit right the results are worth the fuss.

Oh! I should mention that I've been fighting with the velcro on the Better Beamer this winter. My BB is probably 8 years old and this is the first year I've had to reglue the velcro....twice.

Nice set! I checked out your Vermont birds...jealous, I don't have any Robins that hung around during this brutal winter!

Thanks Sandy - which part of the VT are you in? And we haven't had any robins around here yet either. Those are chickadees.

Here are a few from today:

My bad Sandy... I totally mis-ID'd those shots you're referring to. Yep... dumb me. However, that day was really amazing! The robins and waxlings (didn't get a good shot of) all came through together. There were so many!

Not a problem. Looking forward to spring and all the bright colored birds!

Wonderful images, especially that last one.

I've never entertained using a flash. Your images prove that it would be worth using one, and perhaps investing in a Beamer.
