I bought an Avenger D600 boom from Amazon. I also got the E700 baby drop down pin. On Amazon, it says "Frequently bought together," and shows the boom, the drop down pin, and the E650 solid pin.

"Well why not," I think, "I guess there must be a reason that pin is popular"and add the E650 to my cart. So now I have this pin and I honestly don't know what to do with it.

I have an assortment of Manfrotto Super Clamps, including two 036MR pins (external link) that will almost certainly supplant any need for the E650.

It was only ten bucks, but I don't think I need it, so I'll probably just send it back? I feel a little silly now. Tell me what to use the E650 pin for.

Attach it to your boom arm clamp to mount another strobe to.

My Manfroto and Impact stand/arms have a built in pop up pin for this purpose

Thanks, that makes sense - though it doesn't seem like it's a "must-have" with the boom arm and drop-down pin. I would additionally need that clamp to make the pin useful.

indeed, the boom does not have a grip head clamp, i don't think the drop down pin would fit right anyway?

the drop down pin will allow for less rotational torque on the boom arm … without it once you have your light and modifier hanging on the end the modifier will want to twist the whole boom arm. With the pin and light/modifier hanging straight down a few inches from the boom, the amount of rotation applied to the boom is substantially less. Not a big deal if you set it and forget it, but if you need to tweak the light up or down a bit, it will help out.

it might also help keep some modifiers and small lights away from the knob at the end of the pole.

in this image, the light and modifier are probably placing very little torque on the boom arm:

in this one, the dish is farther away from the handle:

Thanks.

The E700 drop-down pin fits and swivels properly, exactly as shown in your second image.

The E650 solid pin isn't something that I need right now; I just bought it because Amazon suggested it, and now I'm second-guessing.
