Black background is perhaps a poor choice as this dark horse gets lost in it. Unless you were going for a low key look.

If not going for low key, i would try having the horse closer to a door way/window and use the sun for back lighting, causing separation.
As Joedlh said, the horse gets lost in the background.

With more light, you can go for more depth of field as it doesn't look like enough of the horse is in focus.

If you have a flash consider trying to use it off-camera to provide a side-light that illuminates the horse's head alone (ergo the light is not hitting the background). This will hopefully bring the horse out of what its currently in which is a more "muddy" underexposed look. If you have two flashes then one either side - one main one just giving fill light, would be more ideal. If you look at a lot of shots like this of a horse you can see that often there appears to be one really strong dominant light source coming in at the side; which helps to define muscles, fur and overall contrast.

Tools of the trade: Canon 400D, Canon 7D, Canon 70-200mm f2.8 IS L M2, Sigma 120-300mm f2.8 OS, Canon MPE 65mm f2.8 macro, Sigma 150mm f2.8 macro, Tamron 24-70mm f2.4, Sigma 70mm f2.8 macro, Sigma 8-16mm f4.5-5.6, Raynox DCR 250, loads of teleconverters and a flashy thingy too

separation from the background is a problem with these shots. if not able (or willing) to use a flash, even placing a strong lightbulb in a shop light above the horse's head would provide a bit of light to place a highlight on the hair on top of his head.

I really like your first shot. To me, the dark background works! If there was a way to have him in a box stall, sticking his head out the stall door without a halter on would have been even better. Did you get any shots like the first one, without his tongue sticking out?
