When I first saw this bird he was digging into the mud under the snow:

He got his beak pretty muddy:

Here he is cleaning his beak by rubbing it on a limb:

You can see the yellow on his wings. When he took off flying those yellow wings really show up:

This is the first time I ever saw a flicker

Thanks all of you for hose comments. Rick I was not aware it was female. If the female is this colorful, how beautiful would a male be?

It took me a while to figure out what she was doing down in the snow. She "flicked" the snow out of the way, and then started digging into the mud below the snow. This went on for about 7 minutes. I actually took well over 100 pics of this, and then up in the tree where she cleaned off her beak.

Males will have a black stripe starting at the beak and running across the cheek.

Thanks for the comments guys. This was in the front yard of the office where I work, so at lunch time I was able to shoot them. I got so excited about getting these. One of the ladies I work with said, "Boy, it sure doesn't take much to make you happy".

That is exactly what a fellow photographer and I were discussing a while back. All the careful planning in the world can't automatically make success. Luck is involved, or I prefer to say "good fortune".
