OK, I got to admit, I've been out of the loop as regards to news and some aspects of logging on to this site, but a quick check to see the latest prices on a website (Camerapricebusters), and two new bodies appear

5Ds and 5Ds r: Looking at the specs, are they really based towards the astronomy photographers?

No.
Perhaps later Canon could make editions specific for astronomy.

The "R" stands for Resolution. It is not "IR". The camera has nothing to do with IR or astrophotography.

I haven't seen the specs but could it have an IR sensor (not an imaging sensor) for remote shutter release?

-edit-
I see something about an IR metering sensor and IR AF assist beam

Nothing to do with IR triggering when it refers to the sensor and also autofocus (AF) assist beam

From what i remember of sensor design the filter in front of the sensor does several things. It blocks IR as the sensor is sensitive to IR, unfortunately as the IR focusses at a different point it would cause the images to appear soft and mushy if the sensor tried to image both IR and visible light at the same time. The second thing it does is apply whats called an anti-aliasing filter which blurs the image slightly. Which is one of the reasons that digital images need to be sharpened. They do this so as to prevent moire patterns appearing on repetitive linework or patterns like brickwork or some cloth.

Both 5ds's will have an IR filter as part of the sensor bundle, however the SR has a filter which reduces the effect of the antialiasing filter therefore making the images innately sharper but prone to moire patterns.

The SR is mostly aimed at landscape photographers who don't take pictures that are likely to produce moire, ie avoid man made items such as brickwork, tiling or ploughed fields.

Moderation is for people that can't handle excess.
