So what's with the SD card slot? Id the SD just another option for storage or can I have the RAW written to CF and the jpg's to the SD?

You can use the SD as a mirror, as a fall-over when the CF card fills, or to keep a different format than the CF card. It's all on pp. 92-93 of the Basic Instruction Manual.

Thank you...I looked but missed it altogether. I had a look and tried it out on my camera but I may have missed something. Can I record JPG's the the SD and RAW to the CF because I can't figure that out.

Interesting read if you are memory shopping for the 7D2:

Jon is right, many options.

I tend to write RAW or large jpegs to the CF and small jpegs to the SD card. The CF is the home for the images that I use for the bulk of my work and in the SD slot I have a FlashAir (like an eye-fi card but with a different set of options), if I have the playback on the CF I can use the rate button to lock images and pull them aside quickly in photo mechanic, and when I set playback to the SD card, hitting play will boot up the wifi function on that card and I can kick the images out to a waiting cell phone, tablet or laptop for quick review tethering or quick on device edits before kicking them out to social media in near real time. It's nice to know that if I'm shooting something particularly important that I can throw in a larger SD card (I always keep a pock in my CF pixel pocket rocket stuffed with a few for my Fujis) and have full backup or overflow.

I think it is important to consider your shooting style / goals when setting up the card recording. Most of the time, I shoot children's sports and BIF. I bought the camera in a large part for the 10 FPS. Please look at the foot note on page 147 of the digital manual. I read it to say you will not get 10 FPS if you use different settings for the 2 cards. I use raw so I am using it on both cards. I had to buy a bigger SD card to backup my "game day" pictures.

Read it again; I said "fills", as in there's no room for any more images on the first card, the camera will start writing to the second one without your taking any further action.

I have an Eye-Fi Mobi sd card (and a regular eye-fi, but for different uses) that will create a hotspot and send jpegs to my phone or tablet. So when I'm using that, I write RAW to the CF and jpeg to the SD and can preview on the tablet. Nice when I'm not at the house. The Mobi is fast enough for jpegs.

CF cards DO go bad... I can state that from personal experience. Just had a Lexar Professional 32Gig that will not format in my 7D or my 7Dii. It surprised me as its only about 3 years old.

so the Mobi one allows hotspot and sent jpg? I have a use for that in 2 months...

my t2i has a Patriot LX Series 64GB High Speed SDXC Class 10 UHS-1 - Up to 90MB/sec Flash Card - PSF64GSDXC10 that I paid $80 for in 2009. Runs great and i have under 19k clicks and only that card ever used. Still runs strong..

going to put that into my 7dm2 when it gets here...

Just ordered Transcend Information 32GB Compact flash Card - TS32GCF1000 (160/120 MB/s) too

If you read the full spec of this card, the 90MB/s is for read only. Write speed is at 20MB/s. For most camera, it is fast enough. 19K clicks assume all RAW file of average 25MB per RAW, it is total data written of about 500GB. You have only written the card 10 times at most. It is still a young card.

Right, the Mobi only works with jpg and creates its own hotspot. The EyeFi pro will connect to a hotspot, private or publc, and upload to hosting sites. It also will upload RAW files. And can be configured to work as a hotpsot, but not as easily.

On my 7dm2 I can tell the mobi (or the other one) not to do wifi until I want it to. Which is good since the Mobi will detect a new shot and fire up its hotspot. If you don't then the app on your smart device sees the hotspot and connects to transfer the pictures...which is a pain if you are multitasking and surfing. So when I do have the Mobi in, I leave wifi off until I'm ready to dump to my tablet.

Overall I probably like the Pro card better, but the mobi is nice for traveling when jpegs to the tablet are all I need.

so mind helping me out on which would be best? we do a conference at work every year. I have volunteered as a photographer... I know free but it is a work thing so I am on the clock but I also get access to areas no one else is allowed and some other perks so it is pretty cool.... but...

conference uses an app on cell phones. different games, challenges and the sort. last year I used a micro SD to CF adapter and took pics... take card out.. put in phone (note 3) and upload pic for the challenge..

seems this would be cool...
1. take pic
2. goes straight to phone
3. upload in app...

the mobi the one I want? Conference is end of April (and my 7dm2 will be here friday!!!!!)
