thanks for posting the samples. I am so selling my sigma. sad part is its Nikon mount, good luck to me lol

I kept the sigma for the buttery bokeh it produced. but seeing your shots the zeiss shows that it does a great job. the sharpness however.. can't compare. it's way better.

Less competition for the Canon mount Sigma 35 ART I'll be putting up for sale this weekend :-)

This took me by surprise to be honest. My initial expectation was that the Sigma would actually be the sharper lens.

totally! the 35 art has fabulous reviews and ratings, it seemed hard to out do that lens. but sony/zeiss just walks in and puts a cig in their mouth and huffed out this crazy lens. This lens however doubles the price of the sigma. man you can add a bit more and get a 35 and 50 art with that range of price hehe.

my next lens was going to be a 16-35 fe. this makes it hard to decide. vmad

I like this, thanks for feeding the gear lust :-P

I'll be looking at smaller options first, the Zeiss ZM 35mm 1.4 looks intriguing, but I'de probably need the sensor mod for that.

Are your sharpness test pictures 100% crops of the center of the image? If so, have you also compared the border and extreme border sharpness?

Thanks Charlie! I hadn't even thought about the ZM 35mm 1.4 before barreling ahead with my FE 35mm f/1.4 ZA purchase. I'm really happy, but I should have considered that one as well. But, as you said, might need that sensor mod, which is an extra expense. Still, could be worthwhile. I love this FE 35mm f/1.4, but it is huge and heavy. It's odd: not only are the FE lenses not smaller/lighter than comparable Canon/Nikon lenses, they're sometimes bigger.

Some over at FM are saying my kit photo shows a decentering defect in my FE 35mm f/1.4 because the tree in the background at far left appears to be sharper than the closer trees on the right. I need to do some more detail examinations - maybe it's just that far tree happens to be more contrasty. It's just one image. I need to see that phenomenon repeated multiple times. My immediate impressions of the files so far have been "wow", so I would hesitate to send it back for another one.

Center. I can compare the borders and extreme borders if you guys are interested. The Sigma loses quite a bit of resolution in the borders. This is typical of fast primes and not really a big deal, as edge to edge sharpness isn't an important for the type of shooting you typically do on these types of lenses.

Yeah, I would love to see the corners compared. I know it's not important to some, but sharp corners wide open can be very useful. My Otus is unparalleled in that regard and I love it. :)

I don't often place the subject in the center of the frame because I like to apply the rule of thirds most of the time. Also, center performance is often great on new, expensive lenses. Because of that comparing the borders and extreme borders is, in my opinion, more meaningful.

you can do a more scientific decentering test with distant objects or a test chart (more difficult to perform).

a soft corner should be pretty evident if you aim straight, focus to infinity, and notice some corners sharper/softer.

Damn. The creaminess of that bokeh is just something else with this lens, isn't it?
