So, I have been thinking about possibly getting an L to replace my 17-55 (any advice on that topic would be appreciated as there isn't a clear 1:1 replacement lens), and I noticed that the 17-55 is no longer listed on Canon USA's website in the lenses. Did they quietly end the 17-55's production run?

Cameras: 7D2, S100
Lenses: 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM, 18-135 STM, 24-70 f/4L IS USM, 50 f/1.4 USM,70-300L IS USM
Other Stuff: 430 EX II, Luma Labs Loop 3, CamRanger

It's still listed, just out of stock.

I doubt they have stopped making it. It may just be an error.

Canon.ca still lists it. http://www.canon.ca …egid/2/catid/17/scatid/72 (external link)

Canon.co.uk also lists it: http://www.canon.co.uk …r/cameras/ef_lenses/ef-s/ (external link)

Canon often leaves the pages even if the product is no longer being made for reference purposes and support for owners. Note that the page you linked to does not have an estimated retail price, which all currently shipping lenses show. That is usually an indicator that it isn't being sold.

Canon Japan also lists it. http://translate.google.ca …p://canon.jp/&prev=search (external link)

In any case, even it was discontinued, you can still buy them new at almost any retailer.

The big question, why WOULD they discontinue that lens? Aside from being high priced, it does seem like it's the best quality lens for a crop body (pretty much equivalent to a 24-70 on a FF).

ETA: In that zoom range.

Maybe they're getting ready to release a Mark II?

The build quality could be better...and I wonder how many people buy it. It is a stretch for a lot of crop sensor users to go up to that price point, XXD and 7D owners are about the only people who are likely to consider it. If there was a version with sealing a a bit tighter zoom action I'd be all over it.

Yeah, CanonRumors speculated they could be bringing an STM version. That'd make sense, STM and newer IS. Maybe 15-60mm.

Keyan,

You've been struggling with your 17-55 on how many bodies now? I think you might have a dud.

I've used mine on both my 70D and 7D2 with no issues. It's up for sale because I no longer need it. I bought it for kitten photographs and he's now a cat.

No way you'll see a 15-60 2.8 USM or STM. It would be too big, too heavy, and too expensive.

STM is for lower end $300-$600 lenses not for premium $1000 lenses like the 17-55. Ring type USM is much better for stills because of the real full time manual focus and distance scale. (and no one likes the laggy focus by wire)

I love all my STM lenses, but only because they are sharp and because STM is better than Micro Motor or Micro USM.

I suppose it is possible they might release a new a 17-55 STM version for video, but I would expect Canon to continue with the 17-55 USM or maybe even an updated 17-55 USM II.

Interesting observation. We'll see what comes out of it!
