Ok this is for the wife. She is working on a new curriculum for a class she is teaching next year in conjunction with her creative writing course she teaches seniors at the local high school and I thought I would post this here.

When you think of a photograph that is important. Ones that changed the world or made people understand the world in a new different or significant way - which ones do you think of?

Thanks for your help

Kevin Carter's photograph of the starving child and vulture.

James Nachtwey's documentation of AIDS in Africa.

Paula Bronstein's photographs of the victims of acid violence in Pakistan (and elsewhere).

Paul Watson's photograph of a dead U.S. soldier in Mogadishu.

Eddie Adams' photograph of execution in Saigon.

Nick Ut's photograph of a napalm attack in South Vietnam.

Jeff Widener's infamous video still from Tiananmen Square.

Just a few, hundreds if not thousands more. All photos that had impact on public opinion, awareness and or changes to government and political policies. Photos that had significant impact on the world.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

I was familiar with the first 2, but having never heard of Vanessa Williams, didn't I get a surprise when I clicked on the link . . .

For me it's the Hubble ultra deep field image. Pointing a telescope to an empty patch of sky to see what can be seen and then capturing thousands of galaxies really shows how utterly insignificant this tiny rock we live on truly is.

Interesting to note :: Nearly all the images stated are 'tragic' as opposed to upbeat or enlightening.

What does that say about our collective mental state? And our recognition of beauty in art?

They're high school seniors, they can handle it! Photography can take you places you never dream. If it's a world-changing image, its most likely going to be photojournalism.
One of my favorite images is of the first transistor, but I couldn't bring myself to call it a world-changing photograph because any old photo of it will do.
One photo I'd have to add would be Serrano's Piss Christ to be inclusive of art photography. Although it doesn't suit everyone's taste I think it's essential in understanding the political landscape surrounding endowment funding of the arts.

If you count the # of people who responded, it's half-and-half. The folks suggesting "tragic" images just gave you a longer list. I could have given you an equally long list of "non-tragic" images.
