just got the 5dmkiii before when i had the t4i never took the chance in rain or snow...

Did some research on the 5d3 and plenty of vids showing people leaving it in pouring rain.

However have not seen anything with anyone going into detail about just how much of this lens is weather resistant.
i know i need the filter in the front to seal that off and then theres the gasket from where it attaches to camera..
my concern is the barrel part ..
i was using it the other day in snow and noticed water drops on the barrel .. no big deal right? just a couple of drops .. but how much of this can the barrel take ?

just wanted to see what other peoples experience with this is ,, posititve or negative

maybe its a better idea to keep it at 24mm

take a simple rain cover, it's better for the lens (and your nerves :-) )
the old mk I was great with it's big/long hood...

You actually don't need a filter to seal the front of the lens. It has "excellent dustproof and drip-proof performance" without the need of a filter.

There are a few lenses where Canon does recommend a filter to complete the seal, but the 24-70mm 2.8 II is not one of them.
