I really like this shot. The only slight issue I have is that the horizon seems to be a little tilted...

A Beach called Lepe on the Hampshire Coast UK, very close to Southampton, so alas not very close!

I know what you mean, but it's bang on when I measure it.

a really quick way to check is to just move your browser window down until the horizon is flush with your tabs at the bottom of your screen. you can clearly see the water is not horizontal. sometimes it can be misleading because land is not flat, but the ocean is always flat at far distances.

other than that, the other critique would be that traditionally the rule is not to have your horizon dead center. you normally want either the land or the sky to take up more space. rule of 3rds is the general composition. of course, rules are meant to be broken, but in this case i think it would help. you can crop off the top or bottom to see if you like it. i looked at your photo different ways by moving the browser around and cropping off the top and bottom--i think both ways would work.

otherwise, nice scene and dynamic clouds. gj.

Well that's weird, it's not horizontal when I do that ( great tip! ) but it is when I check it another way???

I generally always use the rule of thirds etc as a starting point for my landscapes and look for something to guide the eye in, but in this instance, I thought it worked best dead center as the sky was as interesting as the foreshore, I took versions moving it up and down, but for me, it worked best dead center, I suppose I was being greedy and wanted the best of both :)

hey it's your art... whatever you think looks good, is good. :-)

i once watched a b&h video on the rule of 3rds. i THINK this is it:

https://vimeo.com/38456496 (external link)

i'm at work so can't look through it, but if i remember correctly the dude talks about the very same problem--do you have to choose sky or foreground? anyway, it's worth a watch since it talks about a huge spectrum on the matter starting from thousands of years ago.

(again, i'm not saying you should change it. it really is up to your vision. just giving you some more stuff to study.)

Well I'm certainly no expert, hence why I'm in the critique corner, and I always appreciate heartfelt advice so I'll be sure to watch that, thank you, but 2 hours, I won't be watching it this week! :)
