I have switched from a Canon G9 to a Sony a6000 mirrorless. So now I have lens hoods and multiple lenses. I have a case that holds the camera and an extra lens. But the lens hood is not attached. If you plan on traveling and sightseeing, do you think it works better to have a small bag, and deal with the lens hood as you need it, or get a larger bag that holds camera with lens hood attached? How do you deal with lens hood issue if not always attached? Thanks.

Most of the lens hoods I have (Canon and Sigma) are designed that when removed and turned around they slide over their respective lens, thus minimizing the space requirement. This can be done if the lens is mounted or dismounted.

I can do that with the Sony hoods too. But i'm used to just pulling my camera out of the case (point and shoot style), so if the hood is not attached, wondering if folks find that a nuisance to attach each time you use the camera?

I don't find putting my lens hood on a pain at all. I usually have my camera out of the bag with my most used lens attached. The bigger question is....is it a pain for YOU to continually put the lens hood on/off the lens. Really doesn't matter how others feel.

I like having a deeper bag so my lenses can point down with the hoods attached. This means the glass isn't touching the bag even if I don't have time to put on a lens cap or if the lens cap pops off- the hoods are touching the bottom, and any sand/dirt/fuzz that may be sitting down there. Depending on what lenses you are hauling around it might not always work, but it's what I try to do most of the time.

Take off current lens, swap end caps, set old lens in the bag hood first, attach new lens. If they have the same filter thread, I swap lens caps too. If they don't, the lens cap gets tossed in the bag, and when I take a break I'll pop them on the lenses missing them.

I use a bag that is deep enough to have the lens pointed down with the hood attached. While traveling I keep the lens caps off and hoods on, its one less thing to keep track of and one less step when switching a lens. I would hate to have to put on and remove the hood every time I took the camera out, I would end up not putting the hood on. Besides you still gotta have a place to keep the hood while the camera is in the bag. Heck my messenger bag holds my 60d with 70-200 attached with hood, and a spare lens or two with hoods attached, or 1 lens and a flash.
