I think they're both just attention whores I find Jared the more irritating of the two. Ken Rockwell probably knows more about photography. He says himself he just writes nonsense for the hell of it.

I once watched video by Jared on why you HAVE to use manual mode. He first shot an Av frame, then went on about how terrible it was, went into manual mode, fiddled around for ages with shutter speed and aperture, went 'tada, see', and was actually back basically at the same settings that Av mode had given him, so I don't have a lot of respect for the guy.

Also, he's either completely thick, or he's deliberately misunderstanding parts the article.

Independently of Rockwell advice, I actually have my SL1 set up to shoot medium sized basic jpegs -- I just use it for family snaps and I cannot be arsed to process RAWs to then downsize to 800px wide for facebook, or print 6" wide for an album.

Having said that, for anything even halfway 'serious', I would never use jpeg. I don't shoot jpegs with my 5D

Used to halfway like Jared. But as he has gotten bigger on the net, so has his head. And I am not talking about the fro. It used to be more like, I do it like this and this why it is a good idea for you to. Now it is, do it this way, or you are wrong and I will argue with you about it

Ken Rockwell is click bait money hungry douche who really does believe that "P" mode stands for PRO. I have a lot of respect for Jared first off because he is a talented photographer, just google his work, Ken is not, and secondly, Jared speaks the truth which is probably why people don't like him. People usually dislike others who are brutally honest and say things that others would never dare say out loud.

Ken Rockwell is brilliant. And he has proven it again here.

He has managed, once again, to be talked about in forums internet-wide, gone viral onto YouTube, written about in blogs and more. A free gift of promotion that would have otherwise cost him much.

It is this effort that has allowed him to become rich promoting and helping himself, not photography. Bad information, just as do bad deeds, garner attention. Which is and has been his end game from the beginning.

When you people realize it is YOU who promote Rockwell and gives him the notoriety to be so wrong and dangerous, and to get rich doing so, then YOU will stop helping him.

Because so many are so clueless, here's some hashtags for ya' Ken: #kenrockwell #learnphotography #camerareviews #photographytutorials

(Oh, and not to spare the blame, this guy Fro, who he is, is just as big an i-d-i-o-t for promoting Ken Rocwell as everybody else is.)

i remember some POTN member a couple of years ago that went to Europe and set his camera to the lowest resolution setting so he could get more pics on the card. Every single picture was taken at something like 600 px. So yeah, Ken Rockwell is an a****le for promoting such filth.

i don't kno the first thing about fro guy, but i could only make it through about two minutes of his rant before i got sick of him too.

It's entertainment, just like Faux news. Get what you can from it and move on.

Where's that Michael Jackson eating popcorn meme?

I have to agree that KR is bad for beginner who want to learn photography. When I first started out, I spent quiet sometime on his website, luckily I didn't pick up any bad habit :). I wish GoogleBot stops ranking him high so his bad advises does get around.

Dear GoogleBot,
Please see my wish above.... :)

Rockwell has been the most successful photography troll on the interenet. It's the people that take him seriously (including Polin) that fell for his jokes and get angry about it

Even the obvious April fool's D3P (external link) camera would be talked about once in a while before someone realizes the prank

really?

His website really only has a bunch of candid snapshot, from what looks like about 6 different events, and googling his name results in lots of pictures OF him, by not pictures BY him (unless all he does are selfies). Every single post of facebook is just a video of him ranting his opinions. His facebook albums have more photos of him than anything, and most of the rest is just photos of gear. I'm not convinced the guy actually takes photos at all tbh :p

He strikes me as someone that is just famous for being famous, not for actually doing anything.

Ken Rockwell is not only bad for photography, he often has no clue about the equipment he reviews. Case in point, he did a review of an old Mamiya Press camera which he panned as being flimsy, unreliable, and having terrible optics. None of which is true. He stated that their backs did not have dark slides, which is an absolute falsehood. Now anybody who has actually owned and used a Mamiya Press, Universal, or Super 23 will admit that they are slow and cumbersome (as are the Linhof, Graphic, and other technical/press cameras), but they, like other Mamiya professional cameras, are very soundly constructed, well, finished, and have excellent optics.

Wow, I’m feeling a bit nostalgic; it’s been a while since I’ve seen a Ken Rockwell-bashing thread…maybe they’ve popped up more frequently and recently than I realize, but for me, seems like it’s been a few years.

Ken Rockwell is a trolling genius, who found the way, how to make himself rich by using our fragile photo-egos. People should stop promoting him.

Jared from FroKnowPhoto is typical example of someone with ego much bigger than his photography abilities. He was always just typical edgy youtuber with awful taste.

Problem is fro really does think he is that great of a photographer. I wouldn't call him a hack, he is just not what he thinks he is. His concept of never cropping... because his high school teacher said not to... is rubbish. The only think I keep to heart from my high school teacher that I keep at heart is when he told me - referring to my work - "even a blind squirrel occasionally finds a nut". Oh so true.

The positive I will say for fro dude is a few weeks ago he posted a review by a real real estate photographer of his own work where he was trashed by the pro... and he accepted the critique. Have to admire that.

Ken has been around for ever. He's always been a bit of a gear head.. which I don't respect. It like lecturing waiters about what brand brushes they should use. Pointless in my mind. But he does know stuff... and if your into the gear wars his opinion is worth about as much as anyones.

Just my opinion... which is about as worthless as these two guys opinions. They are entertainment for me... and sometimes generate a good giggle.
