Whats your take on the sharpness, af system and distortion compared to say the 16-35 f/2.8 version 1 or 2

I was in the market for a wide angle after picking up the 6D recently and decided on the 16-35 F/4. Cheaper than the 2.8 w/ better sharpness. I was looking at the Tokina, but decided to just splurge and get a lens I wouldn't have to think twice about. I didn't like the weight and bulb of the Tokina from reviews. Although it is supposedly a sharp lens, I like the fact that the 16-35 also has IS. $400 is a big difference, if money is an issue, I would have probably got the Tokina or the 17-40.

Thanks for your input tytlyf I have also been considering that lens very heavily this evening and I will probably be heading to Robert's Camera in Indy this weekend to try it out.

I like mine, if you use a tripod, then the extra price for IS isnt of any value. My only 2 complaints...
1. the bulb end negates the ability to put on a filter..
2. Tokina's in general are a bit more susceptible to lens flare..I also have the 11-16 F/2.8 for my 7d

The sharpness is great edge to edge. Focusing works well, I have only had issues when there wasnt a lot of contrast, like shooting the corner of a room with a light colored paint. And that has only been a couple of times. But, I use center point focus 95% of the time, once I use all of the points then it has an easier time of locking focus.

One of my latest with it

EOS 6d, 7dMKII, Tokina 11-16, Tokina 16-28, Sigma 70-200mm F/2.8, Sigma 17-50 F/2.8, Canon 24-70mm F/2.8L, Canon 70-200 F/2.8L, Mixed Speedlites and other stuff.

When it ceases to be fun, it will be time to walk away

I went to Indy today (2.5hr drive) and picked up the 16-28. I wasnt really that impressed with the overall sharpness wide open but stopping down to f/4 is getting failry sharp images. This was however, until I began getting lens communication errors with both my 6d and 5diii. I have cleaned the contacts and I am now performing tests to try to see what the issue might be.

I have discovered the following.
Working through the aperture range, taking one photo at a time. I can get a shot at 2.8, 3.2, 3.5 and an error at f/4.
I clear the error by power cycling the camera
Starting over I get a shot at 2.8, 3.2, 3.5, Skip f/4, 4.5, 5.0.............22. back down to 2.8 and back to 4=error.

Anyone got any ideas?

Ill post this in the lens section as well to see if I can get a bigger range of viewers

Returned this lens and exchanged it for the new Tamron 15-30 VC... this thing is tack sharp wide open under preliminary testing. I may try to put up a review with sample images in the lens sub group
