This one is better

We don't expect photographers to stay the entire time until the last dance and departure unless you're led to do so and are capturing good shots, however, we are not prepared to pay additionally for each 1/2 hour or hour

I think it's a joke. Some of the word choices and phrasing sounds like a photographer (or related field) trying to not sound like a photographer (or related field). I could be wrong, though. It happens. Ask my wife, she'll verify.

"Editing of all negatives." I'm scratching my head on this one.

400+ images, all in one zip file? Try sending that as an e-mail attachment.

ermahgerd!

New photog pricing but they want you to be a seasoned pro...hmmmm

The best is those ads that say "We have no money to pay you but will allow you to use the photos on your website. We don't want them edited, we just want the RAWs."

Merely sounds like a gig which is 'fully specified' by a knowledgeable business professional, one who is "a full-time graduate student and full-time employed in Chicago and my fiancee is a recent Graduate School Graduate that also works full-time in Chicago". Most folks have such vague job specifications that you have to pull out information with lengthly interviews!

You know you are working no more than 8 hrs. on their nickel, and do not have to stay unspecified duration until everyone drunkenly sends off the couple in the limo.

OTOH, the price is VERY low...what I might expect from a weekend warrior 20 years ago...unrealistic in terms of who/what they want in verifiable evidence of past work (vs. the low pay!) And 'drive an hour or more and spend your own gas and wear and tear on the car while doing so'...all for $700. So yeah, it sounds like an arrogant business jerk who 'wants it all for near nothing'.

I agree, it's not horrible, but a little unrealistic.
I am relatively new to the "paid photography scene." I was kind of sucked into it due to friends asking for it, then friends of friends, and then just word of mouth. I am by no means a seasoned pro, and I charge accordingly. But, I have noticed that most clients have no idea what goes into it or what a reasonable rate is and many of them act like they are doing YOU a favor.

Clearly they are not MBA graduate students.

I've emailed my friend in IL about this and this was her reply:

Geez, 8 hours of work for $700, not counting editing? The weddings in Danville... I'm not surprised. It's like redneckville over there.

So let's take a look at this...

THIS IS A LOW QUALITY PREVIEW. Please log in to see the good quality stuff.

Let's use the high end of their offer - $800

Minimum of one hour driving each way, and eight hours on site - 10 hours.

Minimum 400 candid shots AS WELL AS typical wedding shots of wedding party at church and reception, getting ready shots of bride and groom etc. - total would be what... 600 - 900 minimum. So post processing at average of 1 minute each (likely more) is another 10 - 15 hours; total is now 25 hours.

Must have a "multitude of professional photo equipment" How do they know what's professional and what equipment would be required to get nice shots. Willing to sign a contract... OK, who's drawing up that contract.

You have to be someone who wants "the opportunity to potentially increase their photography portfolio", and yet you are not a "New up and coming photographer that is still learning".

The banquet hall is only 15 minutes from the church in the first paragraph, but by the end it's 30 minutes. I wonder how far the hotel is from the church, and are both the bride and the groom getting ready at the hotel or is there another location.

So if you could do this all within 25 hours, you're looking at about $32/hour. Sounds reasonable, but then are you declaring this as taxable income; how much of that is going to the purchase, repair and replacement of the multitude of professional equipment; and then there's the car expenses, the computer, the software, etc. That $32/hr is now looking like $3.20/hr.

And after it is all done and you've worked your butt off for a week to send them their zip file; it's dollars to doughnuts that this couple will be back waving that contract in your face claiming that you haven't lived up to some clause or another, and they're going to sue you because you spoiled their special day.

Or, they could be perfectly delightful young couple trying to create a great wedding on a budget for their once-in-a-lifetime moment....

Decisions, decisions...

Dale

That's a pretty good analysis but I think more time would be needed for editing and thus driving up the number of hours. 600-900 images will take a lot longer to process then just 1 minute. It will take time to copy so many RAW files from memory card(s) to HDD for editing and for future export to JPG. With that in mind I think realistic time for simple edits would be closer to 5 minutes per image. This will astronomically increase the overall time spent on the gig and significantly lower hourly earning potential.

Maybe I'm misreading this but, You can't count the time to transfer files to your hard drive. You literally just stick the card in (or connect your camera), select the folder, and drag them to your desktop or folder, then walk away and go about your normal day while they transfer. Unless you are actually sitting there watching the files transfer. lol

Still though, I agree, this is a very unrealistic ad.

They want the raw files, but they think there will be negatives (to edit, whatever that means). Film? Digital? -? ?
