Certainly for the last few years at least, starling murmurations are an 'in thing' in the UK and are constantly recommended as 'must see winter spectacles'. The most convenient location for me is a place called Brighton on the south coast of England, where potentially tens of thousands of the birds turn up each evening to roost underneath the pier. I'd been saying "Next winter" for a few years without actually turning intention in to action. Getting word that this year was the biggest flock for a while, I finally made the trip three weekends ago and immediately started watching the weather forecasts for when it would be worth a repeat trip! On both occasions I've been blessed with large flocks and red sunsets.

Mostly I've concentrated on either capturing them against the red sky, or playing around with slower shutter speeds to emphasis the hectic motion within the murmuration. I'll be interested to hear if you think it works...

I love them all, with the exception of the B&W one! The first one was my favorite until I got to the two bright colored sunset shots! Wow, worth the effort you put into making these great shots!

Wonderful set Paul, I really like those shutter speed experiments.

Sweet. I love March 8 with the sun. The color is pleasing of course. But what I like is racked out the viewer gets a sense of the sheer number of birds. Makes me wonder how far out to the left the flock continues?

I'd be interested in more shots showing the "cloud" of birds.

I don't care for the blurred shots. Example using the last shot. The birds are blurred but also looks like the backgound clouds are blurred. The impression of bird motion is mitigated when the picture as a whole is moving. Just my opinion. Respectfully submitted.

Keep 'em flying,
Greg B
