What's the difference between a commercial photographer and an advertising photographer? I see them get thrown around a lot when someone is describing what type of photographic work they do. Sometimes see/hear someone say are one or the other, or something say they are both.
Are they basically similar or is there vast difference?
Thanks!

An advertising photographer is a commercial photographer who creates images used in ads. A commercial photographer usually works for companies rather than consumers, not all commercial photographs are used in ads, there are other kinds of uses like editorial.

I think it's picking at straws to be defining the two separately. In general, commercial photographers shoots the product, person or structure needed for the promotional or editorial material while advertising photographers would shoot anything to sell concepts, ideas and lifestyles as needed by the client. Against all dictionary expectation out of the words; 'Advertising photography' is broader in context and techniques than pure 'Commercial Photography'.

I go along with this. Advertising photography is an area within commercial photography, with the major distinction being who commissions the photography. Commericial photography is B2B while consumer photography is B2C.

Agree with all of the above. I tell people that have no idea of the business end of photography that I'm a 'commercial' photographer. It helps to deflect the question "oh, do you shoot weddings?"... and I tell people who do know a little about the business that I'm an advertising photographer.

My answer for most photography questions: "it depends...'
