Over a month ago I applied for media credentials to shoot an upcoming show. Sent everything they requested. About two weeks later I sent a courtesy email asking if they needed any further information. Did not get a response to either email. Now the show is coming up quick and I am wondering if I will be getting in or not. I am new to all this as in previous shows all the leg work was done for me and I just had to show up and take photos.

I know there are a ton of seasoned concert guys out there and I am hoping they will chime in.

Possible a follow up phone call might get a response?

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

I'm my experience the tour manager is rarely looking more than a few dates ahead when it comes to approving media credentials. Requesting credentials too far in advance can actually be a negative, in that regard, as your email for a show a month from know decends ever so much further down the email inbox... If it's a major tour with an assigned publicist, media person you may get more advance notice.

FWIW, I've received approvals on the "day of" a number of times...and sometimes I've never heard a thing ( and look ahead to the next show I'm interested in shooting...). You may want to have your editor (assuming you are shooting for a media outlet) follow-up directly...

Thanks for your response. I had not thought about the emails slowly going to the bottom of the list. I did notice that this act has several promoters for the same tour. One night is being promoted by one company and two days later when they are in my town, they are being promoted by a different company. So far I have found on this tour in this province, three different promoters you would have to contact for media access, depending on which city the act is in.

I found out about the "day of" when I signed up for media accreditation for one of the major concert promoters. There are a number of concerts in a different city and I was told that most times it could be "day of" so there goes any trips i had planned. I could not justify the expense of travelling only to not get in.

Sometimes it's mess from my limited experience. I've been notified that I've been approved 3 acts into a music festival. Once I was even approved AFTER the show.
Most the time though it seems if I don't get a quick reply from my initial response then my chances of getting in are slim. Not to say you will have the same luck but that is my luck

When I am shooting it is not uncommon to find out a day or two before the show because media lists are usually turned in the day before or the day of the show.

Recently, I have been requesting months in advance with no negative responses, though there are likely to be some that say "come back the day before" and still not get anything

I accidentally requested one two months before the event, years ago, because it was the festivities around the corner and got accredited straight away

That saying, I mainly keep mine to a two weeks period before the event. Some respond straight away, some the day before and some not at all, so it's not untypical for a no response from them, it's either they do handle the accreditation via the tour managers or are not the ones dealing with any accreditation with the said artist(s), this is probably the reason why they are not responding, is because they either don't know or they don't deal with the accreditation process at all

I usually email the week before, often the day before. For festivals I reach out 4-6 weeks or so in advance

Thanks for the replies all. The reason I applied early is that I was told the venue would only allow 5 media credentials to shoot in the "pit". It is a small town and small (3000) seats for a concert and I have been turned away in the past due to spots being full already. I will just leave it be and hopefully I will get that email.

Ordinarily, the venue where I shoot let's us (the pool of house photographers) know in advance who's in for a show. I found out yesterday that I'm shooting Sarah McLachlan on Wednesday and Boston (holy 1978) in May. The "official" word won't come from the tours until the day of or the day prior, but the Marketing Guru at the venue has been in contact with both tours and has been told what she'll get from them in terms of credentials...

Just shut up and smile...

But do email them on the day before or on the day, to inquire to whether you have been successful

So just to follow up, I did get in. For whatever reason the original company putting on the show was no longer putting it on and everything transferred to a different company and a quick email this morning sorted everything out.

That's good to hear, it's usual they keep quiet, because they are so busy dealing with others, plus there are other variables, like the one stated that other people were dealing with it, not necessarily them
