Has anyone used this device to good effect with a big prime or a 100-400 + extender? Does it give you the increased stability of 15% claimed by RRS?

Hejnar do something very similar. I did have a look at these sort of supports a while back when I had a 600 F4 L IS with a worn tripod ring. In theory they look like a very good solution as they off load the tripod ring on the bigger Super Teles, for a 100-400 I really wouldn't bother. Additionally it may well impede the zoom mechanism.

I note that you are using a 5D3, do you really need extra stability with a 100-400, given it's ISO capabilities? Just keep the shutter speeds sensible and IS will be useless let alone spending out on one of these.
Just my 2p

I agree with you on the 100-400L. For it to do any good you would have to re-adjust the front part every time you zoom because the diameter varies.

I use a similar device for macro work. Putting 2 or 3 extenders on the camera body, followed by a lens, I think a bit of support is warranted.

That is something I should consider as I often use extension tubes - ending up with quite a few joints! However for the 100-400 I think it would be more trouble than it's worth.
Interesting for Macro however.

For the 100-400 with an extension was really my concern.

I still wouldn't go for it due to the fact that the 100-400 extends/shortens when you zoom. If you were just setting it at a given focal length then this may not be a problem.
Extension tubes/extenders can cause some play in the mount but with a single tube/extender this is not really an issue.
