Lots of examples of 100-400 II with 1.4 TC posted on POTN. I have also been using Canon 1.4TC II with 100-400 II and I'm very satisfied with results.

See bottom of this page for x_tan's results with 3.4 TC (1.4 and 2 stacked !)

One of those examples:

Here's one of mine, 100-400II with EF 1.4TC II.

Yes well you will have no problems with either of those lens combinations on your 1 Series bodies. They have featured f/8 AF for quite some time. Admittedly in my last reply I neglected the CDAF available in Live View, which has no aperture limitation. It's just not effective for a moving target, as it is far too slow. Oh and 1.4× plus 2× is actually only a total of 2.8×, as you need to multiply the converters effect, not add it.

Yep, I highlited OP's comments "as results can be mixed to say the least" and my post was just to point out that optically it is well worthwhile.

Regarding 1.4x and 2x stacked, I have now been educated :) Thanks.
Obviously x_tan, who did post examples knew that as he stated focal length as 1120mm.

Nice pictures. Yes the 1Ds with the 100-400 MII will focus with a 1.4 extender. The 7D with a 100-400 will not. Ok you might be able to get focus at 100mm. But if you are trying that you don't need an extender.
