Hi I am new to this forum and new to Canon having just switched from Nikon, I have a dilemma, which would be the best lens for birds and wildlife a 300mm f4 or a 400mm 5.6 I know the technical differences and would normally stick with the 300mm because of the larger appeture but I have a Canon 7d MK2 and the ISO capabilities are brilliant so the shutter speed I would lose with the 400 5.6 would be compensated by the higher ISO. Am i thinking correctly here or is the 300mm optically better?

Thanks
Ian.

When I was making that choice, I bought the 400 f/5.6 for the extra length. I was never truly happy with the results, though others are quite fond of it.

If you could save up a bit longer and purchase the new 100-400ii, you won't be disappointed. The images are every bit as sharp and the flexibility of a zoom is better suited for what I photograph, i.e., mainly birds and assorted wildlife. It also has a relatively short minimum focusing distance, something with which the 400 f/5.6 struggles, so I can take photograhs of butterflies, etc. as well. I think the 400 f/5.6 mfd is around 12 feet, give or take. I'm at work or I'd check the specs on the Canon site.

Has anybody on here ever used a 2x converter with 300mm F4 and if so does the AF work and what do you lose. I have a 7d Mk2 which supports F8 but does only the centre focus point work?

Ian.

Yes, only the center point (plus expansion) work at F8 on the 7DII.

Thanks for your reply but not sure what you mean by expansion?

There are four more focus points next to the center.
