So I know I am waiting to the last minute but I need some help please.

All of my lighting is Elinchrom and I use the skyport system to trip them

I just but an Alien Bees Ring Light.

Is there a way I can use the skyports to trip them or does anyone have something else they would recommend? I know I could trip them as a slave but I would like to be able to remote trip, if for nothing more than checking lighting as I set up.

Thanks!

Most of my lighting is Elichrom, and I also have the B800 ring light. I think you're SOL with the skyports...unless you optically slave the ring light. I use pocket wizards with everything, and that works, of course. If you're using the ring light as a fill light, then I'd just meter the other strobes where you want them and then add the fill last.

Set the ring light to optical slave mode. It will fire when it sees the other light fire; no additional trigger needed. The manual (external link) calls this mode "built-in slave tripper" which makes me giggle a little bit. The manual makes it seem that the unit automatically goes into slave mode if there's no sync cord (or dummy plug) plugged into the sync port.

Optical slave mode may be unreliable in very bright ambient light (outdoor daytime), or if there's no line-of-sight from the Elinchrom to the Alienbees.

Will be very annoying if there are other flash users around. Probably more annoying for them than for you.

Thanks guys. I will try the slave mode which of course will be a pain while metering. I want to try it as the main going for the ring light catch lights. I may have to look into pocket wizards eventually.
