Just got a 85 1.8 --- what filter do you all recommend for this lens? There is million out there :) -- thinking UV multi-coated, etc.

I wouldn't recommend anything special for that lens, except maybe a B+W brand step-up ring if you currently have filters you use for larger-diameter lenses.

Personally, I don't use UV filters because I don't work in mucky situations.

Do, however, get the designated lens hood for it...I always use lens hoods.

Yes, this. And, do as I say, and not as I do, since I haven't picked one up for mine yet. ;-)a

EDIT: no excuses, since there are plenty of third-party hoods available for less than $10.

This lens is very sharp, but being a fairly old design daiting to pre-digital days it does exhibit digital chromatic aberration (as opposed to optical chromatic aberration, from which it is largely free). You'll see this mostly at sharp tonal boundaries between areas of great tonal difference, such as tree branches against the sky. It may or may never be an issue with what you do.
