I was fine tuning the 7D Mk II out back yesterday when I heard quite a commotion coming from above ... never heard anything like it before. So, it appears to be some type of crane but I am unsure which - whooping crane, perhaps sandhill? If those wingtips are black then they might be the whooping crane and I would therefore be quite pleased ... I can't tell though.

They were quite large, quite large and quite high - all together I would say there was better than 40 of them.

Nice catch. Try lifting the shadows or exposure to get a better look at the wings.

Thanks 2n10 - I have run it through LR 5.7.1 and the above is about as good as it gets before blowing out and loosing detail ... I was facing north and looking straight into an overcast mid afternoon sky.

Well, slightly disappointed - after listening to some calls from "all about birds" website, I would say with some certainty that these beautiful birds were Sandhills ... still kind of exciting for me though.
