Hiya everyone,
I went to the Saturday session of the 2015 LA County Air Show this year and thought they did a great job. I didn't sign up for the Photo tour so I missed out on a beautiful sunrise that morning...but I think the price is a tad high for early access...anyway...apparently it sold out...so what do I know :P

Here are some of the shots I came away with. Once again I tried to stay at or less than 1/125 with the props and even shot a few at 1/80. 1/60 seemed too much of a challenge with the crazy winds blowing in Lancaster. The majority of these shots were at 500mm.

C&C welcome and always appreciated! :)

I was disappointed in the pass by FIFI. I wanted it to be lower. Also, it did not show up Sunday. I had the photo access and there were hardly any statics in the morning to shoot. The BitCoin demo was probably the best demo of the day.

Wow...glad I didn't go on Sunday then. Am I the only one that thinks the $90 seems excessive for what they are offering at that show in terms of a photo tour? I also thought FIFI was too high...although with 500mm, I didn't have much room to work with....i contemplated shooting it at a higher speed just to make sure i got it nice and sharp..but at the end kept it at the lower speed to get those props to stand out a bit...

Thanks all for the nice comments.

Questions for the experts here.... whats more important? Sharp Plane throughout...or nice prop blur and not so sharp throughout because of parallax....i wonder if its worth the trouble and throwing away a lot of pics to get good blur on the props... by good i mean almost full circular (1/60 - 1/80 shutter speeds typically)

Let me know what you think....i might post this in a topic by itself in a different forum since most people probably don't look at topics more than once...

Thanks!

I'm no expert, so take this with a grain of salt. I like the amount of blur seen on the B-29 more than the full circle on the P-51. Prop blur is kind of subjective, like the blur of hummingbird wings; some (few) like them frozen, some like them almost invisible, I like them in between.

Thanks for the reply Moose. So would you suggest shooting a P-51 at 1/100? I think the shot above was at 1/80...too much blur?

Dude, you're a much better shooter of aircraft than I'll ever be, so I feel funny suggesting anything. And like I said, the amount of preferred blur is subjective.

Edit: I would have to go to at least 1/100-1/125 or more, just because my panning sucks :-D

Usually for prop planes I like to go 1/200th. With those slow shutter speeds 1/60th it is way to slow and most likely you will get a lot of blur unless you are using a tripod. These things are moving fast as well. Most would agree I think that for a plane like the P-51 1/200th is about as slow you want to go if it is in flight. Helos are the trickiest. Even the the Osprey is hard to get a good prop blur due to its slow rotor.

I agree with you...the ospreys are very tough. I have to go down to 1/40 to get anything good with them...
