With all the resources online (AllAboutBirds.org, WhatBird.com etc) and my Reader's Digest "bird book" I still have trouble identifying certain birds. Please help me determine if this is a downy or hairy woodpecker.

It's a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. Note the white wing stripes and red crown. The Hairy and Downy woodpeckers lack those markings.

Is she on a palm tree? I think of Sapsuckers as northern birds.

Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers are migratory birds which winter from the Mid-Atlantic coast to the Texas panhandle and southward into Central America. At this time of year many of them are still enjoying the Palms and other southern amenities. The first may already be shifting a bit northward.
