It's amazing how fast some things deteriorate.

Sitting for 4 years is a lie. It has been sitting since 1996. In 2010 a couple people rented the track in it's crumbling condition and ran a couple late model races. You can tell by all the Winston Cup logos.

I thought the same thing. Still, less than 20 years seems kinda quick for the level of deterioration. In the second shot, it looks like the broadcast booth area is about to fall down on the right side.

That's true but I assume it wasn't in the best shape when they abandoned it in the 1st place.

Thanks for posting!

Didn't realize it was 96 since the last race there.

exactly.

i used to drive by that place regularly back in the early 90's. Most of the parking was in a field across highway 421, on race days it was a mess. They had to shut down the highway every 20 minutes or so to let people move back and forth from the track to the lot. Not that it was any kind of super highway. :P All the talk was of all the repairs the place needed to bring it up to modern standards.

I've been to many races there with my dad in the late 80s and early 90s. It's sad to see this place falling apart like this. I live about 30 minutes from the track, go by it on 421 pretty regularly. The guy that owns the Charlotte Motor Speedway owns this one, too. There's a guy that still lives on the track grounds, he's sorta the "caretaker" of it I guess you'd say. If he's out, and you ask, he'll unlock the gate and let you walk around. Top Gear, the British one, filmed a show there a couple seasons ago, too. Here's another interesting read about the history of the track, and how it got it's start.
