DSLR Speed Challenge #371: Chiaroscuro

Any genre, as long as the image displays chiaroscuro characteristics



This challenge begins when posted, and will end at 9:00 p.m. Pacific time Wednesday, April 1, 2015 - April Fool's Day! Winner of this challenge will be announced shortly thereafter.

Standard Rules apply
Photo Submissions:

1. Camera: Any DSLR Camera
2. Time: Any on-topic photo taken at any time is eligible, although photos that have won other competitions should NOT be entered.
3. Size: Please visit Image Posting Rules.
4. Post Processing: Do whatever you like and the host will decide if it works.
5. Posting: ONE PHOTO per photographer in each challenge. Camera model & lens used. Post brief EXIF data including ISO, shutter speed and aperture used.
6. Commenting: No commenting during challenge. When the posting is closed and a winner has been declared, comments can be made in this thread.
7. Keep it clean, and both Family and Work safe.
8. Have questions, please don't PM me - I will be in a remote area, with no internet service from early Friday morning until the wee hours of Wednesday morning, the 1st. Sorry I won't be around to answer questions this week; you'll just have to give it your best shot. I do plan to be back in time to choose & announce a winner shortly after Wednesday's deadline.

M_Six: Scotchie is a cool cat! I like the classic side lighting, with one half of the face directly illuminated with nice soft light, and the other half in mild shadow.

Darkslinger: I love all of the lines, forms, and textures going on throughout the frame, as well as the balance between positive and negative space... ..what a good choice to go B&W with this one!

Jason: I like the stark quality of this image.....the starkness emphasizes the pattern and the leading line. I especially like how you "broke" the edge of the frame by "cutting in half" the lights on the top and bottom edges - I think that was a good compositional choice, and that it looks better than it would if those two lights had been entirely included. I also like how the nearest light is shone close and in detail; that helps the viewer to better understand what is occupying the rest of the frame.

Steve: Wow - what striking eyes! I am also drawn to examine the background here, as it very subtly plays into the color palette of the subject. I can't help but to wonder what the background elements were; particularly the bluish tones that produce a kind of detached halo around the right side of the dog's face, and again appear at the very top of the frame, surrounded by black. Do you remember what it was that produced those bluish highlights?

Benitoite: What a cool rock! It looks like there is a lot going on in its composition. Is this what a geologist would call a "composite"? I have good geologist friend who would love to scrutinize such a rock, with all of that rich and varying texture.

Yes, it certainly does work!
And this image earns you the win.

This is an excellent example of chiaroscuro, with the very bright tones and the extremely dark tones (negative space, in this instance) being shown in distinct contrast to one another. I really like how you managed to shadow the back of the baby's head so much that it just melts away into the black background....this is so much more effective than if the back of the head were visible, as opposed to just disappearing into the darkness the way it does.

What makes this unique is the fact that the light source is not only known, but also shown! That makes this image a "Chiaroscuro Classic" in my book!

I look forward to seeing what challenge you have for us with the next Speed Challenge.

I do know that the red parts are mineral iron inclusions, and is an opaque quartz crystal with volcanic ash portions.
