Will this defeat pre-flash on G5

I have several small flashes equipped with sensors that cause them to fire as slaves and have a notion of how to synch them with the G5's shutter, uneffected by pre-flash. Please let me know if I'm on the right track --

An ancient, but perfect, Canon Speedlight 177A is clipped onto the camera's bracket and the built-in flash is masked with serveral plies of Post-it Notes to prevent it from emitting its burst. Focus is done manually, shutter speed is set at 1/60 and the 2nd screen is set up. For portraits in shady, exterior settings, ISO 200 is generally used.

Canon "Support" has got me confused because they respond that the G5 won't work with the Speedlight 177A. Wrong! I just tested it on a still life in a darkened room (but did not test the situation with the slaves).

Am I on the right track? Am particularly interested in shooting portraits outdoors in shady locations using the slaves and a silvery reflector. What settings would you use?

Some of the earlier flashes have a trigger voltage high enough to seriously damage a G series camera, any thing over six volts is dangerous.
It might not do it first time round but it will soon enough.
Check the voltage on any camera you use before attaching it .
why not use manual mode and use the built in flash to fire the others it will be at full power, or you can set it to a lower value.

the 177a has a trigger voltage of 6.77v see this website for details.

Thanks, Terry,
Botzilla issues a neutral warning about the 177a, so I've switched over to a Sunpak 018ST that, despite the claims, is inconsistent when attempting to fire on the digital 2nd flash but puts out more light than the camera flash.

At least, the Sunpak seems to have a safe trigger voltage.

I was under the impression that preflash on the G5 fires at all settings, including Manual. To work around this, I cover the camera's built-in flash with a couple of plies of Post-it Note material and shoot with the Sunpack and two slaves (the 177A and a Vivitar 2600). After much trial and error some nice practice still life images were recorded with this ensemble at ISO 400 and F8 with Screen 2.

Your input was most welcome.
Gene

PS - I also have a wonderful little Powershot S410 that comes along on our annual visit to Paris. This no-brainer, point and shoot image taken at Giverny is my all time favorite digital shot and might even have pleased Monet.
