Baseball with New 6d

Bought a 6d for xmas and have been pretty happy with it. Noticed the first time I took it outside, for Baseball (been cold and wet here) that it seemed to underexpose slightly, bumped the compensation up by 2/3 which corrected that but every so often in auto iso it will drop a pic to 100 iso making those captures unusable.

Can I ask why you are using auto ISO? What mode are you shooting in?

Auto iso for convenience, shooting in shutter priority between 1/1600 and 1/2000. First time with the camera outside and the first time with the 100-400 on it. Moved up from a T1 to the 6d.

I'm no pro by any means but what I do is shoot aperture priority set my aperture to the dof that I'm after usually lowest I can get with the lens then adjust my iso to get the desired shutter speed then fire away. You can get great shots with a much higher iso on the 6th than you could with the T1i. I mainly shoot night football and I can comfortably shoot iso4000 with the 1D3 and now I have the 1D4

I see no issue with auto ISO. Set your desired shutter and aperture and as clouds roll in or out or day gives way to early evening you are good to go with no changes.

But I'd you're shooting full manual you'll miss more shots than shooting AV with a set ISO. If your shooting full manual you really need to be paying attention to the exposure every shot instead of consintrating on following the action

Shooting manual with auto-ISO works for me with the 7DII. Especially, shooting outside sports like a baseball game on a partly cloudy day where the sunshine is intermittent with clouds. You can set the shutter speed and aperture where you want them and forget about it and shoot away.

And with the 7DII you have the option of exposure compensation when shooting manual with auto-ISO.

Tried manual auto iso combo, worked really good until this anomaly popped up. Following pictures were back to back series (last /first) only difference in exif was 20mm in focal length, first was 310 second was 330. ISO dropped from 1000 to 200. Not being able to adjust exposure compensation in camera made more post work. I sincerely appreciate everyones comment's and suggestions. Not sure if this is a lens or camera issue at this point, will try the same settings with another combination and see what I get. Pics are SOOC, Thanks , Chris

it's probably your metering mode, especially considering you are shooting guys with black jerseys. If the camera weights the jersey heavily you get an over exposed shot, if it weights it lightly you get a under exposed shot.

what mode are you in, and how/when are you activating AE?

edit: FWIW, i would be shooting full manual in those conditions. If there were some big fluffy clouds moving across the sky changing the light every minute or two, i would be in Av with an ISO setting that kept SS high. Being new to the 6D you might not be comfortable with high ISO yet, just go for it.

Gary, to answer your question, not yet. Have a game tomorrow , will try it then, and post the results. As for exposure, have been using partial metering , AI Servo, and center point focus. Theses were shot at 1/3200, f4.5 to 5.6 depending on focal length. Couple from the last outing. Have a safe holiday. Thanks, Chris

Sounds good, Try some also with spot metering. I shoot sport exclusively with spot metering, but like I said I'm no pro so I may be wrong but I know my keeper rate is pretty high.

Agreed. I used to shoot baseball with Av priority (f4.0) and had to keep adjusting ISO to get shutter speeds preferred (usually 2500 and higher to freeze arm motion, bat speed and ball). Now shoot mostly in Manual, f4.0, 1/3200 and Auto ISO with +1/3 to 2/3 EV which I can do on 1DX. The main reason for this is that our diamonds get home plate in shadow pretty early in evening while second base is still in nice sunlight....makes it easy when quickly shooting one area and then the next to not to have to switch settings.

Some will worry about noise and such at higher ISO settings when they happen but for me with the 1DX and 1D Mk IV (my main two sports bodies) this is not an issue.
