Canon 16-35L F/4 weekend shots

This September I'm headed to the Pacific Northwest... so.. I wanted to give the 16-35 F/4 a shot. I rented the lens for the weekend and really enjoyed it. I also rented a variable ND filter and a CP filter.

Lots of lessons learned and I hardly used wide angle lenses and/or filters.

1. Pay attention to where the CP is... especally when you go from landscape to portrait....lol need to rotate the filter.
2. When using the stack filters... make sure not to rotate both... as this messes up your shots...
3. Wide.. is WIDE! @16mm I had several shots where the shadow of the tripod... or even my shadow was in the scene.
4. Composition... really challenging (for me) to come up with something interesting.


Those were just a few of the things I experienced ... but it was a fun day of shooting.


I started at Watson Lake, Prescott Arizona and ended up at Red Rock Crossing in Sedona Arizona.


Keep in mind when looking at these... there wasn't a cloud in the sky... and the time of day wasn't the best either. I shot Watson in the morning... and Red Rock in the later afternoon. I was beat from the sun... and didn't stick around for the nice sunset light... next time out.

The lens. Well... what can I say... no negatives at all. It's very sharp... the AF is fast... it handles flare well... it's WIDE... the IS was great... I had a number of shots in the 1/30th a sec hand-held and I was testing it out... they are sharp. No complaints. I'm going to purchase one now. I've shot the F/2.8 version when I shot Yellowstone and I think this lens is sharper.

Some shots... again... clear skies... harsh light... just testing the lens.

Despite no clouds, these turned out nice. The Watson lake ones are my favorites.

I just purchased the 16-34 F4 but I won't have it until tomorrow.

Good ones. I especially like #2.

If/when I buy another lens, this will probably be it.

Very nice series, my fave is the last - excellent b/w conversion.

Nice shots. First one is a fave. Really says a lot about the place.

Very nice set of photos. Be careful when using a polarizer on anything wider than 28mm. I suspect you used one here and there is unevenness in the sky that is typical of a CPL. BTW, the 16-35 f/4 is a dynamite lens. Go for it.

Hatch, a CPL is something you're going to want to use with this lens. Just be careful with wide angle lenses and the sky. However, for reducing reflections and increasing color saturation, there is nothing that beats a CPL, including post processing.

Many thanks for the info. What about using just normal polarizing filter versus the circular? The CPL was a little heavy in the skies... I would hate to ruin coastal shots when we go on the trip.

If you're referring to a linear polarizer, don't know much about those. I seem to recall that autofocus will not work with a linear polarizer.

Gorgeous shots, I love the B&W. Very dramatic.
