What is he/she carrying in the first shot above?

Thanks! In the first shot, it was soft material for the nest they were working on.

Hit up a local marsh this afternoon. Light was pretty harsh, but a few birds were cooperative.

Very happy with the lens so far. I'd all but given up taken photos with my 100-400mm because I was never very happy with the results. This makes me like taking bird photos again.

Great shots on here.

I'm sure most or all owners of this lens have pondered if they should get the Tamron or Sigma... I simply cannot find any reliable reviews for the Sigma "C" yet.

Both are about the same price - so what made you owners decide on the Sigma vs the Tamron which has so many reviews?

If the Sigma reviews say that the 600mm is slightly sharper vs the Tamron, then that might bring me to the Sigma camp...

Thank-you ~

For me, I tried out the Tamron in a local shop and have a friend that has owned one for 8 months. He is getting some great shots but also finding the same quibbles I see from others. The recent Sigma lenses introduced seem to be a big step forward for them and I simply hoped that the R&D would result in the same with this lens. I also dislike with the Tamron how the zoom twists in the opposite direction of Canon. I had a Tamron 70-300 for a time and disliked how it handled as well as the IQ. Also, the Sigma would have a 2 mode OS and customization via the dock.

In the end, it was function and some hope/faith that the Sigma IQ would be at least equal to the Tamron. After 2 weeks of ownership I am very happy I held out for the C as it has delivered what I hoped, and then some, and handles in a way that is very comfortable for me.

I used the Tamron for over a year after going through three copies (one very very early one that refused to track and was returned before the firmware update was issued, one that had a sad accident involving a gravel beach and a mistimed wave and one had an odd rattle from the start and then filled with dust to the point the optics were massively compromised) before getting the Sigma C. For me personally the Sigma is worlds apart - build quality and general feel of both is pretty similar, but the fact that the Sigma zoom rotates in the Canon direction, the custom modes, two OS options, ability to lock at lots of focus lengths and tripod foot strap attachment make it much better in general handling. I also can't quite put my finger on why, but the Tamron was a fight a lot of the time to get the shot and anytime I had a keeper I felt extraordinarily lucky, the Sigma just seems so much easier and even with very limited initial use the success rate is much higher. IQ actually seems pretty similar to the point where that wasn't a deciding factor for me in which I kept, the handling made my mind up.

I think if you can find a store that has both in stock then you should go and hold them both and go with the one that suits your hands better.

Thanks so much for taking the time for your thoughtful reply. 2 copies are being delivered to a local store tomorrow so if they are not spoken for, I am leaning towards the Sigma ~ thank-you again

picked up the Sigma 150-600mm (C) OS today. A few first impressions are positive - I like the quick accurate AF, and I 'really' like how there is a lock on all major focal lengths. The weight is reasonable, as is the build. I am not impressed with the OS (Optical Stabilization). My EF 70-300mm L IS is more stable at 300mm than the Sigma at 150mm...

I am testing mainly at 600mm but once I do an AF microadjustment (I think its back-focussing at 600mm), then I will primarily use it at 500-550mm since this lens and the Tamron are typically softer at 600 vs 500, and 500 is quite descent. A few from today below. It was Very Odd having sunshine ona day I bought a lens! Quite unaccustomed to that! :-P
