Just unboxed my new lens and took it outside for a quick test (I'll hook it u to the dock later).

Seems sharp wide open at 600mm, BUT I'm not sure the OS is functioning properly. Shouldn't I be able to notice its effect (tested on setting #1), and should I be hearing a soft squeaking noise?

put that lens at 600mm and half press the shutter or the AF button if you have it set to the rear. you will notice the viewfinder lock down more stable when it engages.
the OS will make a very faint sound of it moving. You should only really notice it when its right by your head

Thanks for the reply.

I am used to the IS on my 100-400 locking down, but didn't really get that sensation with the Sigma. Definitely not anything noticeable. I was definitely expecting something as good as the 100-400. I'll play around with it some more to make sure. At least the squeaking means it is trying to engage. It is faint but definitely noticeable.

I probably don't have the best technique, but not inexperienced either. Meaningless side note - I use back button focus.

there is a more lockdown look to the OS if your using Dynamic or moderate. its not as much with the standard that shipped with the lens. I owned the 100-400 for a long time and the OS in this thing isnt even a comparison between the 2 in its ability. at 400 on the Canon I wouldnt go below 1/150 to get a sharp image. with this lens I will shoot down to 1/40 at 600mm and get a good shot of something static
here is what the OS sounds like running normal. this was recorded with my Tascam DR05 gain turned almost all the way up and then in adobe premier DB cranked up as well. it was held about 3/4" away from the lens body

Thanks again. I will hook it up tonight and report back. My browser doesn't support the audio file, but I'll listen to it later. I appreciate the help.

You will notice a tremendous difference if you change the OS to dynamic.

Interesting to see the difference between South Carolina and Montana!

Edit: After posting this, I got to thinking...is the difference in rotation mostly due to our difference in location, or is it just because our cameras were pointed at slightly different angles??

I'm not smart enough to know, David, but my guess would be camera angle. This was taken on the beach near Myrtle Beach, SC. Tripod, portrait orientation, pointed almost straight up.

Well after my earlier post to this thread, one of my other shots with the Sigma from the airshow I shot has been selected for the best of gallery.

So I am well chuffed! The funny thing is that I know it's a nice image, but I don't think it's one of my very best, but what do I know?.

As to the question of why the Sigma not the Tamron, well I rented the Tamron, before the VC "fix" and thanks to having the VC on I wrecked about 80% of the shots from an airshow. Having been told by Tamron UK that the VC Panning issue was unlikely to be fixable, in that they would be able to make the VC actually work when panning, kind of sealed it's fate. I have the dock now so once the weather warms up a bit, and its not the middle of winter I shall get out and set up the 16 point MFA, thank god I have ML on my camera, so that it can run the automated DotTune. Then it's just a matter of zeroing out the body MFA at each of the zoom/distance combinations. Also looking forwards to trying out the OS at the more aggressive settings.

I used the dock to set the OS at dynamic, and it seems to be working fine. Thanks again.

As I said before, I'm looking for something to get more pixels on the International Space Station. I tested the lens out 2 nights ago, and I am impressed. Very sharp! I tested it with a Kenko 1.4 tc and was very happy.

Then, I got cocky, and replaced the 1.4 with a 2x tc. I must say, I was very pleased with the result.

Here's the image straight out of camera, followed by a slight crop and processing. Pretty good for an effective focal length of 1,920mm!

edit: (No ISS in these photos) Had a great opportunity tomorrow night, but we've got clouds for the next two days.
