Shot this last week--my first attempt at Mike Kelley style "light painting". Really dark and ambient feeling bar. Very challenging attempt for a first try--maybe should have started with something easier! What do you think?

Great job. Background looks well lit.

I like it. Well lit over all. A shot without the light painting for comparison might be useful. But as it stands, it's a good shot.

Lots of detail front to rear. What were you shooting with?

Good idea Mark to show a comparison--I attached a single shot exposure I did as well. Shot with a 6D and a 17-40 lens with a couple YN 560III flashes. I did experiment for the first time with an Nflash too. Some ambient frames in here too. I think in total there are about 20 different exposures/layers I used in Photoshop.

Wow, the light painting really changes the overall scene for the better. Nicely done.

Looks like a comfy bar. Where is that, if you don't mind me asking?

good job... what bothers me is the different temperature of your fill and the lights used in the bar. It looks pretty obvious a flash was pointed on the spots and it doesn't look natural. I think a gel on the strobe would have corrected this.

Was thinking the same thing. Some fun could be had with gels.

I have no experience with gels--what would you have recommended?

you used a flash to light it?
the parts where you have lit are way too cool in comparison of the ambient lighting. I dont get that warm feeling. The angle definitely needs some work too. My eye is not really drawn anywhere.
