This. You'll get more pixels on target by far with your existing lens and a crop sensor than cropping a FF sensor image, due to the narrower angle of view. With a camera having the pixel density of the 7D, you'll get about 18 mpx on the subject vs. 8.6 mpx by cropping a FF sensor like the 5D3.

I suggested a 7D on page one. OP pooh-poohed the idea. Perhaps the explanation of why will help.

I didn't necessarily have a specific reason I didn't want to go that route. Just a plan of going the new lens route. I may try to find a used 7D around. It's a solid suggestion and I appreciate the input.

I mention it because I went through much the same quandary before buying the 7D. After a long dialogue with TeamSpeed and processing some Raw files created by other folks, I decided the 7D IQ was entirely satisfactory for what I was doing and the AF was a big step up from my old 550D. It's a camera which needs some attention to exposure and post-processing, but is very capable and powerful. It provided a superb pairing with my 5D3 and I didn't even consider replacing it till the 7D2 came out. YMMV, but I don't regret buying it for an instant, and it did a great job while it was my primary.
