I got a new 7D Mark ll and I did the dot tune on my 100-400 version one 3 times and all came out to 0 or +1 so I just left it at 0. I went to a place where they have a blind and a bunch of feeders for birds as I figured I could get some easy shots to determine how the lens is working. At 5.6 or 6.3 most if not all were not in focus. At F8 they turned out good. Here are a couple of samples cropped but not resized. The first is at 6.3 and the second is at F8. Seems like it is front focusing. Also these were shot with out a tripod but resting on the ledge of the blind. Seemed stable enough. No room for the tripod in the blind. Thanks for looking and any thoughts you have.

doesn't look front focused to me...the eye looks to be in good focus...also you can't post large images, so better to link, or post a crop of the area you're trying to show

edit: only looked at the second image...the first is definitely off with the focus, but if it's not a consistent thing, then i'd assume it's just the focus missing...what focusing mode were you using?

How close were you with the subject? The closer you are, especially when you have an effective 560mm telephoto, the less tolerant focus accuracy is, continuous/AI focus maybe better than one-shot.

I was shooting in one shot. I was probably 20 feet from the bird. I was just looking at the foreground and the back ground and it looks to me like there is a little more in the foreground that is in focus. It just may be where it focused on the bird.

If you want to know if your lens is front focusing or not, then put it on a tripod, take a static target (like the focus target here: http://photo.net/learn/focustest/ (external link) ) and take some pictures. It'll be very clear very quickly if you need to make a microadjustment or not.

I have a chart very simular to this one. I printed it off awhile ago but I was just trusting the dot tune method. I can't get good enough light in my house so I will set it up out side and see what my results are. It is going to be rainy here the next couple of days so maybe on Thursday. I wish I had my 150-600 sigma sport I ordered from BHB 2 and half months ago. I would like to get it dialed in aswell. Starting to get impatient with them.
