In the heart of the historical center of Ghent (Be) there are three very ancient and big churches in the vincinity of a hundred meters.
The splendor of its treasures are a must see for visitors to the city and free of charges.
There is not only the different architecture but also paintings by old masters, statues, ornaments, and so on...
The pictures were not made only to show architecture but also to include some details without making the art the center of it.

The Saint Nicholas' Church (13th – 15th century)

The Saint Michael's Church (12th century)

And the Saint Bavo Cathedral (First buildings 942AD – Considered complete 1569AD)
Neither the time nor the place for many clicks during this ordination.

Superb dynamic range on these shots, Marc. Very nicely done. Ghent just made my "To Visit" list. Wifey and I were considering a Benelux trip last year. Time to think about it again.

Thank you sir,

all pictures are made without tripod (not convenient among tourist - high iso) and are the result of manual blending. Some were taken as bracketing (3 exposures.) The two of St Bavo are pseudo-hdr.

Most tourist on such trip have not enough time to see the fine stuff. Often they are in a rush from bus to bus. However, Ghent is not the only city with beautiful medieval architecture and treasures from the past. Brugge (not so far from Ghent) has just about the same history. In fact there are more cities with an eventful past with each their own treasures linked on their past. Even in surrounding countries.
When also intrested in musea you easily can fill a week in one of the two named cities.
Should you and your wife decide to take the trip, staying longer then a few hours in Ghent, let me know, it would be my privilege to show you the finest places.
In each city the residents have a nickname. For Ghent the nickname is “noose bearer.” In 1540 emperor Charles V convicted some leaders of rebellion against his reign to wear a noose. 25 of these rebel leaders were executed. Every year in july there are big Ghent festivities (external link). (Very very crowded! - 7 days approx. 650,000 visitors) Then the guild of noose bearers (external link) parade in the city as symbol of their proud resistance against tyranny.

Hi Marc,

Thank you for your shots - I especially like the first two!

I just spent a few days over Easter in Ghent, and I thoroughly recommend a long visit. It's a *really* beautiful and interesting city.

So as not to hijack Marc's thread, I will start my own and give my impressions of this really rewarding city. I might even conquer my PP laziness and fear of LR and post a couple of photos...

All the best,

Nick
