Is the G7 (original) still a good camera?

I know we're well beyond the era of the G7, but I'm considering a point and shoot to just carry around with me that has more creative functions than my SD1200. Plus, I love the retro look of the G7. I know the G7 X has somewhat of that retro look, but I'm not looking for a $700 camera right now when I can get a G7 used for signifcantly less. For those that have owned or do own a G7, is it a good prosumer point and shoot?

Thanks in advance

That depends on you and the intended results, the G7 is a good tool if it produces what you need it to. It is the photographer that crafts the image and the tool is just to get you started. For casual uses: A G6 sits on my desk for quick email pics. The G9 with tele adapters is used for longer shots and the G15 is carried daily. The 5D-C resides in the trunk of the car when I may want just a bit more than what the G15 may not cover. Funny that I still use old tech when a 5DIII is on hand as well. The only one that is long gone and not missed is the 5DII I didn't see any reason to keep it but the others I did. <shrug>

Buy the G7 and enjoy! :-D

I don't have the G7, but do still have a G9. The G7 did not capture a RAW image for you to process, while the G9 added that feature. If you don't care about having RAW available, then it will probably be fine.

On an absolute scale I don't think you can call a G7 a good prosumer point and shoot here in 2015. The bar is much higher now than ever before. Doesn't mean it is not "good enough" for the OP though, depending on intended use and expectations.

I would also recommend the OP look at the Canon refurbished cameras online. I bought a refurb Elph 110, and later a G15. Both are great for the intended purpose, and prices are low, and the one year warranty on Canon refurbished products is great. Coming from an SD1200, the OP might be interested in an Elph 330 or even a G15.

I am still happily using the G7. I have the retro leather case on it constantly and pretty much carry it wherever I go both at home and holidays.
